Configuration Information

• Computer And Network Database in Oracle (CANDO) keeps detailed information on :
  • Network hardware and software*. There are forms to:
    • Find CANDO information on a selected host*,
    • Find information on a selected host by looking at network device tables and logs*,
    • Search for MAC address or IP address in history of Router ARP*,
    • Request Name Server lookups, Pings and Traceroutes from the SLAC Web server to your browser.
    • Update the CANDO database*.
  • Telecommunications phone information*.
• The firewall* router blocks some dangerous protocols to reduce SLAC's network security exposure. Any device placed inside the firewall must be registered. To register a device use the SLAC Nodename and Address Request Form*.

• SLAC Size of the Local Area Network a summary of specific characteristics of SLAC's network and hosts.
• Protocols supported across the SLAC LAN are: the TCP/IP suite. We do NOT route Appletalk Services. We do NOT bridge DEC's MOP protocol (see below), nor do we route DECnet phase IV (turned off 10/1/99) or IPX (Novell's Netware protocol), by policy IPX is blocked at routers. Anyone who believes they need DECnet phase IV support can migrate to DECnet Phase V (DECnet applications over TCP). The contact person at SLAC is Charley Granieri. • Server Usage Classification* provides a functional (file, compute, interactive, other specialized server) list of the main Unix based servers at SLAC.
• Switch ports, by policy, are disabled if they are not registered as having something connected to them. This is to reduce the disruption caused by incorrectly connecting up a new device, and to improve security. Note that most desktop devices today (Oct-97) are connected to shared hubs and NOT directly connected to a switch port. If you need a device to be connected to a switch port, you will need to contact the Help Desk.
• Windows NT Domains & Windows Workgroups provides a list of all SLAC's WNT domains.
