SLAC dial-in service is back up, but different John Halperin 8/24/96 (Revised 9/3/96) ASCII dial-in service has been restored for the 926-5000 number, but there are some important differences. The main difference is that the modem pool is now connected through a Telnet terminal server instead of the Micom switch. Until March 1997, it will still be possible to access Micom services but the procedure has changed, as explained below. You will need to set your terminal and modem for 8 data bits, no parity. Note the change: previously, the modem pool used 7-bits/ even-parity. For reference, the modem pool uses Microcom V.32bis modems. Connections are best made at modem speeds of 9.6 kbps or 14.4 kbps. Modem speeds slower than 4.8 kbps or faster than 14.4 kbps won't work. After making a connection to 926-5000, you no longer need to hit the return key; the terminal server will immediately display a banner with some brief help information followed by the server's prompt, `xremote1>'. At the prompt you can enter the hostname you want to connect to, or `switch' to reach the Micom switch. When you logoff from the host, you will be returned to the terminal server's prompt, and you can then connect to another host or type `logout' or `exit' to drop your phone connection. Currently, there are only 7 lines available in the 926-5000 pool, so please disconnect when you are not actively working. You will be dropped automatically if you are inactive for 60 minutes. (The 60-minute timeout is subject to change if conditions warrant it.) We are working to install additional lines.
