Using the telephones in Main Control

MCC Phone Etiquette

When answering the phone, it's better to use "Main Control, this is ____" (fill in the blank with your name) than "Hello?"

If you're actively running PPS, it's OK to ignore other phones in MCC (especially if there's another operator in the room) until you're done with the PPS transaction.

It's also OK if the phone is ringing off the hook, to put someone on hold until someone in MCC has the chance to talk to them.

SLAC Basics

Placing Calls

To call someone else at SLAC, dial their four-digit extension.

To call someone outside of SLAC, dial '9' then the number. (Either '9' + 7-digits or '9' + '1' + 10-digits)

Help using SLAC Pagers can be found here.

Assistance

There is a SLAC operator on duty during the day, dial '0' to reach them.

If you don’t know someone’s number, you can dial x8777, which will prompt you to dial in the last name of the person, then transfer you directly to their office phone.

Glena has manuals for the phones in MCC if you ever want to know more about them. There is also a great deal of information about programming and using the phones here.

For more details and policies, check out the SLAC Telephone Users’ Guide web page. This also includes basic information about voice mail. There is also a Voice Mail Reference Card (like a cheat sheet).

Pick-up

Any call coming into MCC can be picked up from any phone in the room by lifting the receiver and either hitting the pick-up button or dialing '63'.
