Travel & Directions

Flights

The Bay Area airports, San Francisco International (SFO) in particular, operate direct flights to and from many international airports around the world daily, as well as most major cities in the US. Coming from any given European airports such as Geneva, some of the most likely hubs for a flight change are Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, London and Zurich. Although it is also possible to change at US hubs such as New York, Washington DC or Chicago, this is usually not as convenient as a long international leg directly into San Francisco. A hop within the US has the drawback that you must go through US immigration at the first US landing (port of entry), pick up your checked luggage to go through customs, then recheck the bags. The long US domestic legs also only offer very simple paid meals/snacks.

Ground Transportation

Local Airport Access:

San Francisco International Airport is approximately 39km (24 miles) north-west from SLAC
» Directions from SFO to SLAC

San Jose International Airport is approximately 29 km (18 miles) south-east from SLAC
» Directions from SJC to SLAC

Oakland International Airport is approximately 50 km (31 miles) north from SLAC, on the other side of the Bay
» Directions from OAK to SLAC

From SLAC to SFO:  The SLAC to SFO drive route also includes a convenient slip-off from 380 just just before the airport to El Camino then along San Bruno Avenue where there are many gas stations for car refuel. You can simply continue on San Bruno Avenue to car rental return as shown. I280 traffic is normally quite good so that the 25min time estimate is OK for off peak hours. For rush hours you may need at least 45min to1 hour. However, you need to budget in time for rental car refuel, return and air-train to terminal etc.

Car Rental:

Rental cars provide an effective localtran sportation option favored by many regular SLAC users, which will give you more flexibility, and sharing the rental car between a few people will make this even more cost-effective given the discount rates available to SLAC visitor (described below).

Enterprise Rent-A-Car is one of the major rental car companies with many outlets including all major airports (SFO rental car center has many rental vendors altogether in one central building nearby which is very conveniently reachable by air-train), which has significantly discounted rates for SLAC employees and visitors. To take advantage of this special deal you need to make your reservation through the SLAC corporate link for major Bay Area airports (should show a SLAC logo with text SLAC-OAK,SFO,SJC ONLY-CST PAY on top). The Enterprise membership login is optional which can be ignored. The weekly rate for a compact car should be around $230 total not including insurance. You should check your institutional travel rental insurance policy. If you have similar policy like Stanford covering both basic and collision damage waiver then you don't need any additional insurance. In case you do need adding insurance, you should ask at the rental desk at airport pickup. Sometimes Enterprise public site and other car rental companies can also offer very competitve rates which can be even better than the SLAC rate so that it is worth checking them in any case.

In case you decided to get a rental car after you arrived at the Stanford area, there is also an Enterprise outlet located on campus (360 Oak Road, Stanford, CA 94305, (650) 833-8060) and offers a free pick-up service from the Stanford Guest House lobby. The reservation through SLAC special deal should use this link for Stanford local rental, which is at a still lower rate of $175/week without airport fees.

Other Ground Transportation:

The shuttle system is probably the most popular means of transportation between SLAC/Stanford and airport for travellers, including many SLAC ATLAS people doing their regular travels to CERN, although it requires a simple reservation. Commercial shuttle cost one way is ~$30, while cabs can be ~$80. However, you need allow some extra time for the shared commecial shuttles which may need to do pickups/drop-offs on the way.

Local Transportation around Stanford:

Marguerite Shuttle (Free shuttle around Stanford) SLAC Line schedule. The Marguerite route and stops within SLAC can be found here (building 49 is Guest House). For those staying at hotels just out of the Marguerite shuttle service area, the Santa Clara Transit VTA bus system serves along El Camino Real with line 22 passing in front of Stanford.

Car Pool Survey
Since the rental car option is adopted by most regular SLAC visitors and also quite economical especailly when it's shared among a few people, we have included a survey in the registration to facilitate self-organized rental car pools. You can enter/update your own info and view the results at any time. You should contact potential car sharing participants directly yourself based on the results.
Day Trip to San Francisco
For those who are staying at hotels along El Camino Real at Palo Alto or Menlo Park and would like to take a day trip to San Francisco before or after the meeting, the CalTrain is reasonably convenient if you don't like to drive yourself. Your choice of hotel near University Avenue or California Avenue CalTrain stations in Palo Alto (see map) would make it easier. The info on time table and fares can be found on the CalTrain web site. Two typical ways to reach popular destinations in San Francisco:
  • Take CalTrain all the way to the San Francisco Station (3 zone ticket, ~40min) then using the light rail or bus in the SF local MUNI system from the Caltrain Depot to your desired SF downtwon destination.
  • Take CalTrain to the Millbrae Station (2 zone ticket) where you can change to the BART system which has several stops in downtown locations along Market Street, if they happen to be close to your destination.
Unfortunately, the 3 systems: CalTrain, BART, MUNI do not have a joint ticketing scheme so that you have to buy tickets separately after a change.
