SLAC Tours (Monday Mar/26)
Research Yard SLAC tours are offered just before and during the reception at SLAC

Tour points:

  • Klystron Gallery alcove: This will display an underground section of the Linac and provide a view into the 2 mile long Klystron Gallery which is a "must see" for SLAC.
  • Near Experimental Halls of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS): This is the latest experimental facility of high intensity X-ray laser for photon science.
  • Collider Experimental Hall: A quick pass by of the CEH where the SLD detector during the SLC/LEP era resides.
  • End Station A (ESA): This was the site of the original Nobel prize winning deep inelastic scattering experiment that revealed the quarks inside the nucleon. This hall is being reinstrumented for a test beam in late 2012. ATLAS upgrade sensor testing will be one of the primary users. The test beam setup is still in progress so that this is not a polished tour spot. Only for the test beam enthusiasts.
There will be two rounds of tours with participants after all sessions joining the 6:15pm bus to SLAC. Only for those not taking part in the trigger strategy plenary, there is an early bus at 5:15pm for early tours. Due to the very limited time, the late tours will run into the reception for 25min and most people need to choose some subset of tours. Some of the possible options:
  • Early regular tour (Klystron gallery+LCLS+SLD 5:30-6:40pm) + late ESA test beam (6:45-7:20pm)
  • Early ESA test beam only (5:30-6:15pm)
  • Late regular tour (Klystron gallery+LCLS 6:30-7:25pm) only
  • Late ESA test beam only (6:45-7:20pm)
The transportation info for tour and reception are summarized on these slides. The Travel and Directions also has detailed driving direction from Stanford to SLAC.
Stanford NanoFabrication Facility Tours
Stanford NanoFabrication Facility Stanford NanoFabrication Facility (SNF) hosts a large suite of micro- and nano- fabrication devices in a ~100 square meters Class 100 clean room. It is an R&D fabrication facility with user membership. The original 3D silicon detector was protypesd here. Due to space and time constraints, only tours looking in from the windows can be arranged. Due to the packed agenda, the only time we could allocate for this is Friday afternoon after the main sessions are over. There is a capacity limit so that tours are restricted to of 5 groups of 15 people each for 30min each. Please follow the walking direction from Knight Center to SNF (~14min) to gather in front of the main entrance of the Paul Allen Building (Center of Integrated Systems)

Reception (Monday Mar/26)
breezeway picnic area A reception is currently planned for Monday Mar/26 on SLAC site at the Panofsky auditorium breezeway and cafeteria dining area, with an extensive hot food menu and drinks. The SLAC tours will be scheduled before and during the reception. Please see the SLAC Tour section for tour times. The transportation info are summarized on these slides. The Travel and Directions also has detailed driving direction from Stanford to SLAC.
Workshop Dinner (Thursday Mar/29)
University Club The workshop dinner is planned for Thursday evening at the University Club of Palo Alto within a short 5 minute drive from Stanford. There will be a short time window reserved before the dinner to allow a self-guided walking tour of the Stanford campus (see below). The dinner signup is already closed as of Mar/9. Drinks will start 7:15pm and the main dinner is at 7:45pm. Those with rental cars should drive directly to the dinner venue, and taking passengers if you can. Please note in the driving direction to get there, you need to drive along Foot Hill Express Way to Hillview Ave then U-turn into the side road to reach the University Club. The dinner buses will be waiting in front of the Cantor museum to depart at 7:00pm. Buses to hotels after dinner will depart at 10:00pm. One bus stops at Super 8/California Avenue, another stops at University Avenue and Stanford Park Hotel. Due to limited bus capacity, it is recommendable to take/give rides in cars while mutually convenient.
Stanford Campus Visit (Thursday Mar/29)
Cantor Museum Stanford campus is a popular tourist spot in the Bay Area. There will be an opportunity before the Thursday workshop dinner for everyone to take a self-guided tour of the campus. The Cantor Museum and the Rodin Sculpture Garden have the largest Rodin collection outside Paris. The Cantor Museum (free admissions) is open until 8pm on Thursday. There is a convenient route along Serra St. from the meeting site to the Cantor Museum passing by the Hoover Tower, Memorial Court, Main Quad and the Oval along the way (see the map of campus attractions). Further details about the Stanford campus can be found at the Stanford Visitor Info page. Buses will be waiting at Cantor Museum to take those without cars to the dinner venue at 7:00pm.
Informal Dinner Outings (Tues/Weds/Fri)
Informal dinners During the evenings with no official events, workshop participants will have the chance to explore the many local dining options. Palo Alto alone has 180+ restaurants, while some local wineries with great Bay views and San Francisco are also within a 45 minute drive. We will arrange some dinner groups led by locals for some popular options, with online signup sheets to gather groups and car pool for those without their own plans. After consulting the restaurant list on the Dining page please fill in the signup below if you are interested in joining a dinner group.
