Upgrading Building Switches

The procedure for upgrading each building switch is:
  1. For the switch to be upgraded, net-eng provides a table of admin, hostname, ipaddress, macaddress, username, hosttype, building, room, tap, time host last seen. There is an example of a table here+. There are instructions (for net-eng) to create the list.
  2. The table is sent as email to each admin for the switch. An example of the email is shown here.
  3. Net-eng creates and configures the new subnets on the switch
  4. OU admins obtain new addresses for all the hosts involved
  5. OU admins work with users on re-addressing hosts one at a time. Net-eng will be involved to change VLAN when a host is readdressed.
    1. During this time, the switch has no redundant uplinks, because one uplink is used for the old subnets, one for the new ones.
    2. Therefore we need to keep the re-addressing time as short as possible! (make sure resources are available etc).
  6. net-eng clears the old subnets from the switch and enables redundant uplink
