Problem

With the assistance of David Leeming of PFnet we started PingER monitoring of a host in the Solomon Islands in November 2003. The RTT and losses are shown below (or see the Excel generated plot}:

It can be seen taht the RTT is around 800ms with peaks of 1300-2000 ms. Losses and RTT seem to peak together possibly indicating congestion. Looking at the RTTs as a function of time of day (see below), it appears that the larger RTTs come from 9:00pm until 6:00am GMT.

To try and see where the losses/congestion starts to occur we ran a traceroute and pinged each of routers along the route 100 times. It appears the main delays and possibly losses come on the link from AS4755 (AS = Autonomous System, AS4755 is apparently VSNL-AS Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. Autonomous System according to http://bgp.potaroo.net/cidr/autnums.html) to AS7474 (OPTUSCOM-AS01-AU Optus Communications Pty Ltd) on hop 10.
