Preface

The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) hosted the second Workshop on Cryogenics Operations from May 9 – 11, 2006. We covered the latest practical engineering and operational management applications and techniques that have been found to enhance operational costs, reliability, and flexibility, with topics such as establishing the optimal refrigeration design cycle and operating design points; utility management; manpower scheduling; plant control philosophy and automation; short and long term maintenance scheduling; refrigerant loss detection and control; system contamination; component reliability; and equipment technical performance issues.

This workshop series is aimed at individuals who currently operate (or plan to operate) large helium cryogenic plants in the support of physics research and provides a periodic forum for national laboratories to present and discuss current technological advancements, operability, and maintenance experience of large cryogenic plant facilities which support the physics research community.
