About IEPM-BW

The IEPM group at SLAC monitors network connectivity and End-to-end performance for sites involved in High Energy Nuclear and Particle Physics. As such, the members of the group work closely with the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), Internet2, the U.S. D.o.E funded laboratories, laboratories throughout the world, and Institutes and Universities throughout the world involved in data intensive science.

The Internet End-to-end Performance Monitoring (IEPM) Group has its origins in 1995 in the WAN Monitoring group at SLAC, which monitored links to many sites that SLAC collaborates with by using the IP Ping facility. Since it's inception, the ESnet Network Monitoring Task Force (NMTF) quickly become involved in the project and the work was extended to cover ESnet sites. Several DOE Labs installed the IEPM-BW monitoring software which greatly improved our knowledge of the network. We currently have 5 sites running our IEPM-BW monitoring suite and 29 sites which SLAC itself monitors (target nodes) around the world.  We are always looking to expand our monitored coverage and look forward to working with anyone willing to help us further this endeavor.

This document outlines this the 3rd revision of IEPM-BW.  This version, uses a MySQL database to store the test and node configuration information as well as the data and test logs. It also has a scheduling mechanism so that regularly schedules tests to run in background.

This system provides facilities for performing tests probes between monitoring and target hosts.
  • Monitoring hosts - run the IEPM-BW system and perform the tests and process the results. Each monitoring host has a MYSQL database local to it for storing the data and monitoring configuration information.
  • Target hosts - are remote hosts to which the monitoring hosts perform tests. This requires the target hosts to have daemons continuously running to respond to the tests.

To become either a monitored and/or target host, please contact us.
