Chimera
Chimera is a World Wide Web browser for UNIX-based computers
running the X Window System, which is very simple and takes less
system resources. Chimera is reluctantly made available here
solely for the purpose of on-line documentation within our private
network. Thus, one should consider chimera as an interpreter for
viewing document implemented in html, rather than an internet
navigator.
- A tiny thing for you to do
create a directory ~/.chimera under your home directory simply by
copying the one from mine
% cp -r /u1/jingchen/.chimera .
then, fire chimera by typing
% chimera
- A few things you may want to know
First, check what are under ~/.chimera
% ls -F .chimera
bookmarks.html cache/ mailcap resources
translations
By default, chimera looks for the resources in ~/.chimera/resources.
One can customize the function and appearance of chimera by modifying
the resources file. Here is a sample resource file:
%cat resources
bookmark.filename: ~/.chimera/bookmarks.html
cache.directory: ~/.chimera/cache
cache.persist: false
chimera.homeURL: file:/opt/chimera/doc/index.html
html.propFontPattern: -adobe-helvetica-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1
view.capFiles: ~/.chimera/mailcap:~/.mailcap
www.translationFiles: ~/.chimera/translations
Following are the brief explanations to the items listed above:
- bookmark.filename
is the file to use to store the bookmark list.
- cache.directory:
is the directory to use for storing cache files and cache index file.
- chimera.homeURL:
is the URL that will be displayed by default when
chimera is executed. It is ignored if the environment variable
WWW_HOME is defined.
- html.propFontPattern
is XLFD pattern used for proportional fonts.
- view.capFiles
is a colon-separated list of "mailcap" files which specify the external
viewers used to render content-types that chimera cannot render internally.
For example, the following mailcap file tells chimera how to display
Postscript files and MPEG files:
%cat mailcap
video/mpeg; mpeg_play -quiet -dither 2x2 %s
application/postscript; ghostview %s
