Stanford Graduate Student Orientation
SLAC Program Sep/21-22, 2016
This is part of the two day program for incoming new graduate students at Stanford starting Fall 2016. The Wednesday Sep/21 program will have Stanford campus emphasis, while the Thursday Sep/22 program will have SLAC emphasis with research introductions at respective locations, both campus and SLAC have open office/lab programs for both days. With SLAC as in independent school in the Stanford academic system, there are extensive research programs in the two faculties at SLAC for Stanford students to choose their thesis topic and advisor from.

Stanford Campus <=> SLAC Travel
For those who would like to visit SLAC open house/lab on Wednesday afternoon, please check the free campus Marguerite shuttle schedule to travel to SLAC. For Thursay Sep/22, there will be a dedicated bus to take students from campus to SLAC in the morning (depart 8:30am sharp from the end section of Via Ortega just outside the multi-story parking structure). At the end of Thursday SLAC orientation, students are will also use the Marguerite shuttle to return to campus yourself. Please see the end of this page for details about the Marguerite shuttle.

Tour of the CDMS Cryogenic Test Facility will highlight the work being done at Stanford and SLAC to develop and test detectors for the SuperCDMS SNOLAB experiment. These detectors utilize phonon and ionization signals in Si/Ge detectors to search for low-mass dark matter interactions, complementing the search for dark matter at higher mass by LZ. The tour will take those interested into the clean room where the Fermi gamma ray telescope for a firsthand look at prototype hardware for the experiment, as well as the inside of the dilution refrigerator capable of achieving 7 mK that will be used for testing.IR2 tour:
From 4-5pm, we will host a tour of the experimental hall IR2, which used to house the BaBar experiment and is now the home of the LSST clean room and the LZ Liquid Nobles test platform. In this dark sector of the lab, LSST will build the world largest camera for studying dark energy and dark matter, while LZ is prototyping and carrying out detector RD on liquid xenon from planned and future dark matter experiments.
There will be sign-up sheet available in the morning sessions and at lunch time. We will leave from the Dan Akerib office at 4pm.
