Re-Engineering of the GSI Control System

U. Krause, V. RW Schaa

The GSI control system supports a sophisticated operation scheme of the accelerators. Typically three ion sources service simultaneously six experiments on a pulse to pulse basis with a repetition time of 20 ms in the linac and a few seconds in the synchrotron. For tumor therapy hundreds of different energies can be delivered in a fully automated operation. To enable this operation adapted control solutions have been developed. No substantial revision took place since the system was introduced 15 years ago. It is still based on the technology of the eighties: Most components designed to in-house standards, procedural software in Pascal, Modula-2 and Fortran, poor modularization. Maintenance is becomming ever more troublesome and requires switching to modern methods. Existing components have to be reused in many places to reduce effort. The upgrade plans and methods will be presented.
