The PS Controls Group launched, in April 2000, a project to provide a new front-end infrastructure for the ISOLDE radioactive beam facility at CERN. Industrial components were introduced, with the intention of deploying them later on as standard components of the control system for the whole of the PS Complex. This paper describes the new ISOLDE controls infrastructure, with emphasis on the use of the Profibus fieldbus, distributed I/O modules and programmable logic controllers (PLC). The use of Ethernet, as communication medium to connect the VME/LynxOS-based PS front-ends of the present control system to the PLCs, is also described. A proposal for applying the ISOLDE approach to the PS controls is presented, in particular in view of future CERN projects, such as CTF3 and LEIR. To conclude, we make suggestions on how to extend the proposed solution to applications where real-time response is an issue.
