The Institution History can be used to track the career history of people and also to build networks showing where people have worked. For example when someone wins a prestigious prize, this information would allow one to see in the database if the person was once at their institution. Tracking trends in the affiliation flow is also something of interest, e.g. how many people obtain their undergraduate and Ph.D. degrees in different countries? It is also useful information to determine if, say, a J. Smith paper belongs to a particular J. Smith based on the date and affiliation (otherwise this can be very difficult to do).
