QuarkNet at SLAC/Stanford
What Is QuarkNet?
QuarkNet is an educational program
sponsored by the National Science Foundation
and the U.S. Department of Energy, designed
to involve high school physical science teachers in cutting-edge high
energy physics research. These teachers work together to develop curriculum to
bring their experiences back to their classrooms, exposing students to the
physics and technology of particle physics.
QuarkNet at SLAC
The SLAC program started in 2002 during the summer with four lead
high-school science teachers participating in research projects at the
laboratory. The following summer, 2003, 18 teachers participated in a
2-week workshop at SLAC. Since that time, QuarkNet/SLAC has sponsored a
number of one-day workshops at SLAC, or on Stanford Campus. These
one-day workshops consist of topical Particle Physics or Particle
Astrophysics talks and activities geared toward the teachers own
interests and knowledge, and discussions on how these topics may be
integrated into their classes. A stipend is provided to teachers who
attend. QuarkNet/SLAC offers high-school teachers and their students the
opportunity to interact with laboratory physicists.
QuarkNet one-day workshops are usually offered on Saturdays, 2-4 times
per year. All high-school science teachers are invited and encouraged
to attend these workshops. Announcements are emailed in advance,
typically with a choice of days to help fit the high school's academic
schedule.

Past Program Events
QuarkNet Summer Institute, Summer 2003
From June 19 - July 3, 2003 eighteen teachers
met at SLAC and Stanford to learn about particle physics through activities,
talks, tours, and by building cosmic ray detectors. See more on the QuarkNet
2003 web page.
Lead Teacher Research, Summer 2002
The kickoff event occurred during the summer of 2002 when
four lead teachers were involved in research at Stanford Linear Accelerator
Center (SLAC) for eight weeks under the mentorship of SLAC
physicists. The research dealt with testing and improving various
detector components of the BaBar experiment at SLAC.
