• Vision: SPIRES-HEP would become the most useful and, thus, used database in high-energy physics
• Communication: Physicist just returning from CERN wanted to show the library a ‘neat’ application CERN had developed
• Flexibility: Switched focus and resources from other efforts to implement Web interface to SPIRES-HEP
• Competence: Provided the world-wide community with an up-to-date, comprehensive, reliable database via a user-friendly interface
