Internet Traffic: Finding order within chaos, Walter Willinger
The analyst/statistician showed
- A statistician’s view of the Internet
- applied the latest techniques/terminology
- such as fractals, self-similarity, wavelets, texture plots
- made comprehensible mathematical description of the way the Internet “sessions” work from microseconds to hundreds of seconds, & identified the historical impact of the Web
- impact on network design
Notes:
The self similar behavior has serious implications on the design of systems that
require queuing since it makes it difficult./impossible to estimate the maximum
length, so maybe we should say Willinger is a harbinger of doom for network
