Notes:
Advertised by Web page, was to have been advertised by all-hands mailing. Will be in next IP (Feb 10, 1998). Decided against all hands Email since the majority of people on the all hands email do not carry pagers, will contact people who do not bring pagers in.
Conversion of 650 digital page hardware to alphanumeric hardware (i.e transfer of existing 650 number to new CAP #) are targeted to be completed in March This conversion is done while you wait, so need to bring pager in. We are charged by the phone number.
The new pagers are the small version. Most holders of alphanumeric pagers prior to February 1998 had the larger Motorola Advisor Gold FLX. The FLX is more expensive to buy, and a more reliable, easy to use product. Many people like the smaller pagers. Both the FLX & new smaller pagers cost $10/month. If an FLX dies it will be replaced by a newer smaller pager.
We wanted to move to only apha pagers since it reduces spares carrying costs, and also means that all pagers will be able to accept alpha or digital pages, so one does not have to each pager type to know (say from Telalert) whether this person’s pager can accept an alpha page.
The pagers as delivered from Motorola to AirTouch have the “News Topic” set to on. Since SLAC does not want this feature Airtouch has to open each pager and set “News Topic” to off. This is delaying delivery. We are expecting delivery of the new pagers to meet the March 2nd 1998 date. This date was determined in collaboration with users to enable all list to be gracefully changed in time and for a graceful conversion.
