SLAC/INFN Summer Exchange Program for 2004

The US Department of Energy and the INFN of Italy announce a Summer Exchange Program for 2004 to promote the exchange of students in science and engineering between the two countries to work on projects which will further their experience in the areas of science and technology studied at the laboratories.

Five positions are available at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). SLAC is one of the world’s leading laboratories in the area of elementary particle physics. It has experimental and accelerator facilities covering many areas of physics, engineering and computing. Students in these areas are sought for this program in order to foster international collaboration for future scientific research on these topics.

Candidates must have completed at least three years in an undergraduate curriculum in physics, engineering or computing studies in an Italian university and wish to join a team at SLAC for approximately 2 1/2 months between June 15th and September 15th, 2004.

Opportunities include: Upgrades to the BaBar accelerator-based Experiment, preparations for the Gamma-ray Large Area Space-based Telescope (GLAST), smaller experiments and computing topics.

Students will be joining an experiment which is either running or under construction or being upgraded for future research. You may also attend the SLAC Summer Institute, “Nature's Greatest Puzzles”, a program of seminars that will examine some of the questions yet to be solved and the tools that will be used to solve them. See http://www-conf.slac.stanford.edu/ssi/2004/ for details of that program.

Compensation is $5000 for 2 1/2 months at SLAC. You must hold an appropriate visa to work in the US in order to participate. Assistance will be provided in transportation and obtaining a visa.

The appropriate visa status for participation is a short-term J-1 visa. Current processing time to obtain a required DS-2019 document from Stanford University is 2-3 weeks and consulate/embassy processing time ranges from 2 weeks to 4 months.

If selected to participate in the program, the following must be provided to our International Services Office:

  1. a completed DS-2019 application form (attached pdf or msword)
  2. a CV
  3. a copy of the passport bio page(s) (includes birth date, passport number and expiration date)
  4. home address (required for the SEVIS database)
  5. address and telephone number where to send the DS-2019 document via Federal Express when it is ready.

You'll also need to check with your local embassy/consulate for complete details and requirements.

To apply send (or email) a letter explaining your interests in physics, engineering or computer science along with a curriculum vitae or resume with your educational and work experience. The deadline for applications is April 2, 2004. Results will be announced about April 9th or earlier.
