Xilinx ISE 5.1i for Windows XP

General Information

You can either run Xilinx locally off the remote installation drive (pub X:), or you can download the application to your local disk.

This version can be installed and run only on a Windows 2000 or XP machine.

Setting up a client PC

Although the install procedure warns that you need Admin privileges, it seems to work without Admin privileges anyway.

• Go to Folder X:\Applications\Supported\Xilinx\ISE51i\bin\nt
  and double-click on 'setXenv.bat'.

  This will do all tasks needed for setup, including the installation of a Programs folder entry called "Xilinx ISE 5". I prefer 5.1i at the end, and you can change your Programs Folder entry afterward if you like. It also creates a desktop icon for the main 'Design Manager' application. The Programs Folder has an entry for the "Project Navigator" application. Any of these items can be changed later manually.

• If not already done for an earlier version, set up the LM_LICENSE_FILE variable.

To install the application to your local disk requires about 500 MB + 200 MB for documentation. The installation procedure again claims that you need Admin privileges. Two CD images are required, which are available on the X: drive.

• To begin the local installation, go to Folder:
  X:\Applications\Supported\Xilinx\ISE51i\CD_1\
  and double-click on 'setup.exe'.

• In the first window, "Welcome - Xilinx Software Installation", Press 'Next', to indicate you already have a Registration ID.

• In the next "Accept Software License" window, check "I accept..." and click on 'Next'

• In the next window "Enter Your Registration ID" enter the following three sets of digits:
  1446-2679-6281
  

• In the next window "Select Destination Directory" specify a local dir; also specify here the Programs Folder entry you would like, for example "Xilinx ISE 5.1i".

• In the next window "Select Software Modules to Install", you can leave the defaults selected.

• In the next "Update Environment" screen, you can choose to update your XILINX and PATH environment variables, which is a good idea.

• The installation then begins.

• After the installation completes, you now have to repeat the same procedure with 'CD_2' under the top-level Xilinx installation directory and repeat the same steps as for 'CD_1'.

• This completes the installation. If you haven't already done so for an earlier version, set up the license file variable:

• In the /Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/environment menu, set the following three (system) environment variables, in case they are not yet set appropriately:

  If you installed locally, then:
  XILINX= (your local top-level Xilinx installation directory)

  Otherwise, if you set up your PC as a client:
  XILINX=X:\Applications\Supported\Xilinx\ISE51i

  PATH should include: $XILINX\bin\nt

  LM_LICENSE_FILE should include, at the beginning of the (possible) list,
  the entry: 1700@sunlics1; 1700@sunlics2; 1700@sunlics3
  followed by ';' and any other entries you may have.
