Pspice and Capture 10.0, for Windows |
The basic idea for running the application is to install it on your local
drive using the Xweb interface. It requires about 750 MB of disk space,
including SP2 which is also available for installing.
- Log on with local system administrator privileges.
- Begin by going to the Xweb page: xweb.slac.stanford.edu.
- Find the OrCAD 10.0 entry and click on "Click to Install", to the right.
- Agree to the license requirements on the next screen.
- At the bottom of the next screen, under "Install" are listed two "steps".
Select Step 1, "Install main application".
- At the top of the next screen, again click on Step 1, "Install
main application". This is an unnecessary redundancy, unfortunately.
- The next File Download" pop-up window prompts you whether you want to
"Open" or "Save" the download file. This is the customary choice in which
"Open" downloads and installs the installation file. This is the choice I would
recommend. The "Save" option allows you to save the downloaded installation
file to a location of your choosing. After that you have to double-click
on the Saved file to initiate the installation.
- A popup progress window appears. After it indicates 99% completion,
it takes several more minutes for the download phase to actually complete.
Then the file extraction begins automatically.
- On the "Release OrCAD 10.0 Setup" screen, skipping the licensing options,
select "Install Products".
- On the "License Manager Communication" screen, skipping the first option at the
top, fill in the info for the three redundant license serers:
| License Server # |
Port Number |
Host Name |
| 1 |
27010 |
sunlics1 |
| 2 |
27010 |
sunlics2 |
- On the "Release OrCAD 10.0 Setup" screen, skipping the licensing options,
select "Install Products".
- On the "License Manager Communication" screen, skipping the first option at the
top, fill in the info for the three redundant license serers:

- On the following "User Information" screen, enter the customary information.
- After the following confirmation window, in the next "Control File
Location" window, Browse to Folder:
V:\CAE\OrCAD\10.0
and select the "controlfile.txt" there.
- On the "Select Products" screen, keep at most the two selected components, the ones for
which we have licenses: Capture and Pspice. You will get problems later if you select Pspice A/D.
In the same window, Browse to the local Folder where you want the products to be installed.
- On the "Working Directory" screen, Browse to the local Folder where you plan to
store your working design files.
- For the "Select Program Folder" entry, the suggested defaul,
"OrCAD 10.0" seems good.
- After clicking through the following Installation Summary window, the installation
proceeds.
- Near the end of the installation process, several menu prompts appear
for dealing with file types that are currently registered to other
applications. This is only for being able to double-click on a
Pspice-related file and have the right application invoked. It doesn't affect
anything internal to Pspice-related executables and how they function. So
it should be safe enough to ignore all these prompts, since resetting things
may interfere with other applications.
- You are then prompted whether you want to install the Adobe Acrobat
reader. If you (presumably) already have it on your computer, you shouldn't
need to install again.
- The next pop-up message indicates that the installation program is configuring your
environment. My experience is that this process takes quite a while, perhaps 5 minutes,
but it does eventually end.
- After completion of the installation, there should then be a
Program Folder entry for OrCAD 10.0, which includes Pspice and Capture.
- You can optionally inspect the environment variables that were set during the
installation, or create these variables if they have to be re-created later, for any
reason:
License setup
This completes the client PC installation process.
Install SP2
- As for the main installation, go to the Xweb installation page, find
again the OrCAD 10.0 entry, and click on "Install now".
- This time, select "SP2".
- After going through the license agreement, the Service Pack installation
proceeds on its own, since it is able to locate your OrCAD 10.0 installation.
- After completion, there may be an error window announcing a possible
problem validating one of the OrCAD executables such as Capture.exe. This
can apparently be ignored. If you get this sort of error message, check your
"Add and Remove Programs" entry in the Control Panel and verify that the entry
for OrCAD is OrCAD 10.0 SP2.
- You can then exit the Xweb page.
