This web page will help users troubleshoot both the MCC workstations and Sun Rays.

Firefox http://cc4prez.wordpress.com/2008/07/07/firefox-add-ons-nerdiness-at-its-best/Issues

Workstations:

The OPI workstations are Linux RHEL4 32-bit.

Most applications are running locally except for MCC SCP

Slowness:   (perform each step one at a time until problem is solved)

  1. Close all unneeded applications
  2. Log out and log back in to the workstation
  3. Perform a reboot
    1. DO NOT CYCLE POWER
      1. Power cycling results in corrupted file systems which will then have to be rebuilt
    2. Log out
      1. If you cannot log out then leave it alone until Jingchen x4661 or Ken x2558 can fix the OPI.
        1. Move to another OPI
        2. Send an email to Jingchen and Ken about OPI
    3. Select "Actions" then "Reboot"

Sun Ray:

Ultra-Thin Clients running Linux RHEL4 64-bit.

Most applications run on lcls-srv02 & lcls-srv04 except for Firefox and MCC SCP

Sunray kiosk overview

Slowness:     (perform each step one at a time until problem is solved)

  1. Close all unneeded applications
  2. Log out and log back in to the Sunray
    1. If you cannot log out, move to another Sun Ray
    2. Send an email to Jingchen and Ken about Sun Ray
  3. Log out and unplug the power to the Sunray for 10 seconds
    1. log back into Sunray
  4. If slowness still persists
    1. Move to another Sun Ray
    2. Send an email to Jingchen and Ken about Sun Ray

http://cc4prez.wordpress.com/2008/07/07/firefox-add-ons-nerdiness-at-its-best/Firefox:

On Sun Rays Firefox needs access to parts of the SLAC public network so we run the Firefox web browser on lcls-prod03 with a group account.  This allows users to see public SLAC web pages from the private network.

Reasons for slowness using Firefox:

  1. lcls-prod03 is overloaded
  2. SCCS services can be down or running slow
  3. Network issues
    1. Try ping'ing to lcls-prod03 and see how long it takes ( should only take a second )
      1. Type:  ping lcls-prod03
  4. If firefox is slow on many machines the EOIC can kill all firefox sessions on lcls-prod03
    1. Ask EOIC to kill firefox sessions
      1. EOIC has an icon to kill the firefox sessions

Can't bring up excel or word document:

  1. Firefox uses a shared account (mccuser) and only one instance of OpenOffice can be opened to a terminal at a time. If you cannot bring up your document this means someone else has already opened up OpenOffice and not closed it
  2. Workaround:
    1. ssh to lcls-prod02 and type firefox.  This will bring up Firefox using your login name and you will be able to open an OpenOffice document
    2. Use the Citrix Icon on the taskbar to get a windows session.  Use Internet Explorer to view the document.
    3. use remotedesktop to connect to your PC and use your web browser
      1. Don't forget to log off when finished
