Overview

The following directions are for system admins only. The installation is from the X drive. You will need to purchase a license for every user for whom you perform a SourceSafe installation.  Talk to department system admin Tom Knight (ext 2955) about purchasing these licenses. Please ask Frederick Lo or Tom Knight to perform this installation.

Installation

  1. Launch X:\Applications\Supported\VisualSourceSafe\6.0c\setup.exe. You will need the CD Key found at X:\Applications\Supported\VisualSourceSafe\Readme.txt. Be sure to install the STAND-ALONE option.  Install at the default location.  Reboot as requested.

  2. From the Start Menu, go to Start->Program Files->Microsoft Visual SourceSafe->Visual SourceSafe 6.0 Admin.  In the application, go to User->Add User... Add the NT username of your user, without a password, and do not select “Read Only.”  Exit the Admin.

  3. Now launch Start->Program Files->Microsoft Visual SourceSafe->Microsoft Visual SourceSafe 6.0. Select File->Open SourceSafe Database.  In the dialogue box, select Browse...  Click over to V:\Arda\www\srcsafe.ini.  You can leave the database name as “www”.

  4. Close SourceSafe.

  5. Now you must give your user full control over the folders containing SourceSafe on the Group drive.  Navigate to V:\ARDA. You’ll see a folder called “www.”  Right-click on “www” and select “Properties” from the dropdown. Select the “Security” tab.

  6. In the “Permissions” area, click the “Permissions” button.

  7. In the “Directory Permissions” window that appears, Click on the “Add...” button.

  8. In the “Add Users and Groups” window, enter your user’s NT username in the “Add Names” box and give them Full Control.  Click “OK”

  9. Back in the “Directory Permissions” window, be sure to have “Replace Permission on Subdirectories” checked.  Click “OK”, and confirm on the prompt. Close the Permissions and and Properies windows.
