Overview
You’d be hard-pressed to find any webpages without hyperlinks. So of course, NetObjects supports hyperlinks and has made it relatively easy to add them to your website.
There are two ways to add hyperlinks: using the properties palette or using the web toolbar, which you can access by choosing View->Toolbars->Web Tools. Both methods will take you to the same dialogue box. I will cover the method using the properties palette to add hyperlinks to text or images.
Working with Hyperlinks
- Begin by highlighting text in a text box or by selecting an image. Bring up the property palette for the selected object.
- Note the “Link...” button in the bottom left of both property palettes. Click this button.
- The dialogue box that pops up initially has the Internal Link tab selected. This tab allows you to link to other pages in the NetObjects website. If this is what you want, select the page from the list, click the “Link” button, and you’re done. Anchors will be covered in advanced topics. the HTML button allows you to fine-tune the hyperlink if you wish.
- If you select the “Smart Link” tab, you can add links related to the architecture of the site; see Site View for more details on site architechture.
- To add links to assets outside of the NetObjects website, first switch to the External Link tab. If the asset you want is in the asset list in the lower half of the tab, just select the asset and click “Link.” If the asset you want is not present, create a new asset in the upper half of the tab. Note the dropdown -- you can select the proper prefix, default http:// but also available are news: and mailto:, the e-mail link. Enter an optional asset name, then click “Link.” The asset you just created will be available in the future in the asset list.
- The “File Link” tab allows you to link to files. Choose the file you want from the asset list. If it is not available, type in the absolute path or use Browse... to find the file. Add an optional asset name, then click “Link.” IMPORTANT: if the file you are linking to is not already in the Assets folder of your working folder, please move of copy the file into the Assets folder before linking. Later, remember to add the file to the Assets folder in SourceSafe.
- To change a the hyperlink of an already existing hyperlink, follow the above steps as if no hyperlink existed.
- To remove a hyperlink, navigate to the “Link” dialogue box for the object. At the bottom of the dialogue box, next to the “Link” button, click the “Unlink” button.
