Overview

We’ll take a look at how to start editing the ARDA website, and what to do when you are done. I will assume that you have learned the basics about SourceSafe.  If you haven’t, please do so before proceeding.

Step 6, editing the website, consists of all the other pages on the navigation bar to your left. While I suggest you read them all, you could of course also skip around and only read what you need.

The following is a flowchart summarizing the steps below.

General Procedures for Editing the ARDA Website

  1. Be sure either your admin or you have completed the instructions for setting up the working folder.

  2. Launch SourceSafe. You can do so by selecting Start->Program Files->Microsoft Visual SourceSafe->Microsoft Visual SourceSafe 6.0

  3. You should first check to see if the file “ARDA Webiste Template.nft” is checked in. If it is not, you will have to wait until the user who controls the file checks in or undo checks out the file. Then get the latest version of the ARDA_WEBSITE folder.

  4. Check out “ARDA Website Template.nft.”

  5. Open “ARDA Website Template.nft.”  You can do this either by opening the file directly from your working directory, or by launching NetObjects and then choosing File->Open Site from the menubar. If you take the latter route, remember that we are working with a .nft file, so you will have to change the file type in the Open dialogue box.

  6. Edit the website as desired.

  7. Preview or publish the site locally, then review your work.

  8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 as necessary. If you decide that the site is acceptable, publish remotely to ARDA’s UNIX space, to make your changes public (viewable on the Internet).

  9. When finished, save your work, then exit NetObjects (must do before next step).

  10. If you are satisfied with your work, then you should check in “ARDA Website Template” back into SourceSafe.  If you wish to discard your work, you should undo check out the file.

  11. If you added or changed any images or other objects (besides new pages) to the website, then you should add those files to the Assets folder in SourceSafe.

  12. Exit SourceSafe.
