Overview

Before you can edit a file in the project, you have to check it out from SourceSafe. While you have the file checked out and until you check it back in, only you can edit the file.

The files you check out are placed in your working folder.

Checking Out a File/Folder

  1. Open SourceSafe. You should find it at Start->Microsoft Visual SourceSafe->Microsoft Visual SourceSafe 6.0.

  2. Navigate to the file or folder that you wish to check out. If checking out a file, examine the icon representing the file. If checking out a folder, examine the icons of all the files in the folder.

In the example above, note that “ARDA Website Template.nft” has an icon with a red check mark in it. This means that the file is currently checked out. You’ll need to find the user who has the file checked out, Akki201 in the example, and have that user check the file back in before you can check it out.

In the second example, you see the icon representing a file that is checked in.  You can check “ARDA Website Template” out.
  3. So how do you check something out? There are three ways.  You can right click on the file/folder you wish to check out and select “Check Out” from the dropdown menu. You can select the file/folder, and select SourceSafe->Check Out from the menubar. Or you can select the file/folder and then click on the “Check Out Files/Folder” button on the toolbar.

  4. A dialogue box should pop up.  Feel free to enter a comment if you wish, then click “OK.”

  5. The icon(s) for the file(s) that you have successfully checked out should now have the “checked-out” icon.  You may now edit the file(s).

NOTE: Checked out folders have the same icon as checked in folders.  However, all the files in a checked out folder will have the checked out file icon.

NOTE: Even though a NetObjects file may be in your working folder, NetObjects will not even allow you to view the file let alone edit it until you have checked it out from SourceSafe.

NOTE: If you are attempting to check out a folder, and some of the files in the folder are checked out by other users, then when you check out the folder, you will only have control over the files in the folder that were checked in.
