How to add a virtual printer to your XP based PC that will allow you to print to

ACCELOG (the same recipe but a separate printer is needed for PEPELOG or SPPSELOG)

 

The logon ID must have administrative priviledges

 

If the choice of adding a local printer is denied (in the second step of either of the two recipes below), then you must see your Systems Administrator.

 

The PC must have the folder I386 installed on a hard drive.

 

Search on the hard drive(s) for a folder with the name I386. If not found, contact your Systems Administrator.

 

 

In the recipes below, language from your PC monitor is in italics, what you type is boldface.

 

 

Recipe Using LPR

 

Click on Start\Settings\Printers\Add a Printer, which calls up the Add Printer Wizard

 

Click on Next\check the box Local printer\click on Next

 

Check the Create a new port box\using the pull down menu, choose LPR Port\click on Next

 

For Name or address of server providing LPD, type lclselog.slac.stanford.edu

 

For Name of printer or print queue on that server, type peplog or sppslog or acclog as appropriate (note no “e”); e.g., acclog\click on Next

 

Next an Add Printer Software window will appear. Choose a color postscript printer, e.g., Manufacturer: HP and  Printer: HP Color LaserJet PS\click on Next

 

In the Name Your Printer window, type in a name, e.g., ACCLOG

 

In the Completing the Add Printer Wizard window, you should have something like:

 

Name:                     ACCLOG

Share name:           <Not Shared>

Port:                        lclselog.slac.stanford.edu:acclog

Model:                   HP Color LaserJet PS

Default:                  No

Test page:             No

 

[You can choose to run a test page, but afterwards you should delete it from the logbook]

 

Click on Finish

 

Finally you can also check that the printer is listed in on your Start\Settings\Printers and Faxes window. Right click on the virtual printer you have named\click on Properties where you should find:

 

General\ACCLOG (or whatever name you have chosen)

Ports\Port: lclselog.slac.stanford.edu:acclog\Description: blank\Printer: ACCLOG

Advanced\Driver: HP Color LaserJet PS (or whichever driver you have chosen)

 

Recipe Using TCP IP

 

Click on Start\Settings\Printers and Faxes\Add a printer, which calls up the Add Printer Wizard

 

Click on Next\check the box Local printer\click on Next

 

Check the Create a new port box\using the pull down menu, choose Standard TCP IP Port\click on Next

 

On the Add Standard TCP/IP Port Wizard click on Next

 

For Printer Name or IP Address, type lclselog.slac.stanford.edu

 

For Port Name, type lclselog.slac.stanford.edu:acclog Click on Next

 

On the Additional Port Information Required click on Custom\Settings…

 

Under Port Settings\Protocol\click on LPR

 

For Queue Name, type peplog or sppslog or acclog as appropriate (note no “e”); e.g., acclog

 

Select the LPR Byte Counting Enabled box\select SNMP\click OK\ click Next

 

This is the end of the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Wizard you should have something like:

 

 

SNMP:                   Yes

Protocol:                LPR,acclog

Device:                 lclselog.slac.stanford.edu

Port Name:             lclselog.slac.stanford.edu:acclog

Adapter Type:     

 

Click Finish

 

Next an Install Printer Software window will appear. Choose a color postscript printer, e.g., Manufacturer: HP and Printer: HP Color LaserJet PS (or HP C LaserJet 4500 -PS\click on Next

 

On the Use Existing Driver window select Keep existing driver

 

In the Name Your Printer window, type in a name, e.g., ACCLOG

 

In the Completing the Add Printer Wizard window, you should have something like:

 

Name:                     ACCLOG

Share name:           <Not Shared>

Port:                        lclselog.slac.stanford.edu:acclog

Model:                   HP Color LaserJet PS

Default:                  No

Test page:             No

 

[You can choose to run a test page, but afterwards you should delete it from the logbook]

 

Click on Finish
