Lattice Description

The BaBar bucking coil is an electromagnetic device intended to cancel the stray field from the BaBar solenoid into the DIRC phototube/electronics area at the backward end of BaBar.

The DIRC has a large magnetic shield which feels the effects of the BaBar solenoid. The bucking coil is coupled to this shield such that cancelation of the solenoid's effect can be achieved.

As fas a the beams are concerned there is no deliberate interaction with the bucking coil. There is however some anecdotal evidence of beam steering problems associated with non-standard magnetization episodes of the DIRC shield, so care is used to reproduce the magnetic cycle of the solenoid and DIRC shield.
