Present: Peter Bosted, Don Crabb, Keith Griffioen, Piotr Decowski, Bill Olson, Steve Rock Target: Draft of Design Document sent to John, he is working on it. May 15 will be Target review. Beam: Lew has checked that a dump at 8 deg., directly after last end magnet, makes negligible muon background. He will write a memo on this. He is presently looking at muon backgrounds from collimators (like C37 and one in alcove). Peter studied E158 test runs with various quad settings: can reproduce optics. Implications for E160 are that beam in x will be about 5 mm wide (sigma) at diamond, and 1 mm wide at collimator. In vertical, results depends on linac emittance: with damped beam get very small spots, but need to check if beam is small enough with undamped beam (3 mm-murad would give too big a spot size at diamond). Spectrometer: Keith still checking if should use (1+cos**2) for J decay or not. Simulations: Study of B81 filled with alumina. Design of beam pipe being worked on by Piotr. File with atomic catered gammas from beam, which hit sides of pipe and make background. Got rate down from 1000 to 10 charged particles/spill/plane (for huge planes), by improved beam pipe design. Smaller planes will much less. Another problem is nuclear interactions in target. Get about 100 hits/spill in (small) front plane from gammas (low energy, exponential, peaked around 100 MeV). Rates are much lower without beam pipe, so this has significant impact. So, presently hadronic punch-through gammas are a bigger problem than Compton scattered ones. Keith still looking into Nuclear Compton. Peter suggests that we should look at Primakof effect (nuclear coherent pi0 photoproduction: large cross section from lead)? Note: simulations now are for "high luminosity" setting at 48 GeV, corresponding to 5E10 elec. on 0.015 r.l. diamond and 1 mm radius collimator (3 times higher psi rate than proposal). Greg Mitchell will start to work on simulation of E161 spectrometer. Detectors: Steve had an idea to taper thickness to compensate for attenuation. Range telescope: Keith will look for references about resolution. Equipment: Keith talked to Dave Cashy who went to Fermilab. Talked to Volker. Dead ends so far. Greg Mitchell will contact Focus group.
