Preface

From September 12 to September 15, 2012, more than 110 physicists from all over the world gathered together in Strbske Pleso - the highest settlement in the beautiful enviroment of the High Tatra mountains in Slovakia - for the XXXIInd International Symposium Physics in Collision. The Physics in Collision series began in 1981 in Blackburg, Virginia, USA. The general idea is that the scientific programme of the conference is composed of plenary presentations and contributions in poster sessions. Invited speakers in oral talks review and update key topics in elementary particle physics with the aim of encouranging informal discussions on new experimental and theoretical collider physics and their applications. Topics are covering a wide range of physics subjects usually from experimental and theoretical collider physics to astroparticle physics. Specifically, EW phenomena, QCD, Neutrino physics, heavy flavour physics and Higgs and BSM physics were discussed.

Many interesting topics and results were presented at PIC2012 conference, including the discovery at the LHC of a new boson consistent with the expectation for a Standard Model Higgs, presented by ATLAS and CMS collaborations. Among other highlights was the news that a nonzero and surprisingly large value of the third neutrino mixing-angle was measured in 2012. The result is important as it opens the way to future searches for CP violation in the lepton sector. Neutrino mass is the only well established observation that lies beyond the Standard Model. The observed quantities and the data are consistent with neutrino and antineutrino oscillation.A significant improvement in results on the W mass was reported from the experiments at Fermilab's Tevatron: the mass and width are consistent with the Standard Model, leaving little room for new physics. The results of tt and t studies so far are in good agreement with Standard Model predictions, although the tt asymmetry from the Tevatron measurements is larger than the theoretical prediction. No deviations from the Standard Model were reported from the LHC, with all top-quark properties consistent with Standard Model expectations. We would like to thank the invited speakers for the excellent reviews they presented and the authors of the posters.

The symposium was held under the auspices of the Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Head of the Self-Governing Region Košice and Mayor of the City Košice. We would like to express our great thanks to all these institutions.

We express our thank also to conference sponsors - Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic and the European Physical Society.

We would like to use this opportunity and thank all the members of the International Advisory Committee and the Local Organizing Committee for their advice and suggestions.

After such a good experience we hope and look forward to the continuing success of the PIC series in the coming years.
