The Department of Physics and Astronomy and Gateway

you to:
The 18th International Workshop on Weak Interactions and Neutrinos Christchurch, New Zealand, January 21 (Mon) - 26 (Sat) , 2002. Some background for the workshop is given below. Further information will appear on this website as it becomes available. History The International Workshop on Weak Interactions and Neutrinos is one of the major international events in the field of Elementary Particle Physics and Astrophysics. It has been organised regularly for the last 25 years, and it attracts leading physicists and astrophysicists from all over the world. The first workshop in this series took place in Skövde (Sweden) in 1973. It was followed by Strobl (Austria) in 1974, Columbus, Ohio (USA) in 1975, Trieste (Italy) in 1976, Kobe (Japan) in 1977, Ames, Iowa (USA) in 1978, Balaton (Hungary) in 1980, Javea (Spain) in 1982, Talloires (France) in 1983, Savonilinna (Finland) in 1985, Sante Fe, New Mexico (USA) in 1987, Ginosar (Israel) in 1989, Gran Sasso (Italy) in 1991, Seoul (Korea) in 1993, Talloires (France) 1995, Capri (Italy) in 1997 Capetown (South Africa) in 1999. Date and Venue The workshop will take place at the University of Canterbury 21-26 January 2002. Arrival date will be Sunday, 20th January 2002, departure will be on Saturday, 26th January after lunch, and the workshop will run from Monday through Saturday, with Wednesday being free for an excursion. Format The workshop starts with 2 days of plenary talks to review the main topics and set the stage for the working groups. There is a break on the third day (devoted to an excursion), the following two days are reserved for intensive informal discussions in small groups, and the last half day is devoted to summary talks. Since the number of participants do not, as a rule, exceed 100-110, these discussions are quite valuable. In many cases they result in completed projects which are later published in international journals. Sometimes these projects have proved to be major breakthroughs (e.g. the MSW effect was first discussed at the WIN85 meeting in Finland). Fee The conference fee is US$150 and covers the arrival reception and morning and afternoon teas. Information regarding accommodation options will be posted on this site soon. Registration NOTE:
