End of Kerberos4 and kaserver (klog) service

SLAC Computing
UNIX at SLAC
Updated: 15 Apr 2008

For some time, SLAC has been migrating our UNIX systems from Kerberos4 to the stronger security of Kerberos5. On Wednesday, 23 April 2008, we will take the final step in this migration by shutting down our Kerberos4 and kaserver compatibility services. This will have the following effects:

  1. Windows users who want access to SLAC's AFS file system must install MIT Kerberos for Windows in addition to a recent version of OpenAFS for Windows. These products are available on SLAC's Xweb. For help upgrading, please contact your department admin.
  2. The klog command will no longer work to obtain or renew an AFS token. Instead, use the kinit command. (Specifically, the version of kinit in SLAC's centrally-maintained /usr/local/bin, which should be the default for most users.)
