Mailing lists, which evolved from LISTSERV(R), and USENET news groups are two different ways of communicating electronically with people around the world who have common interests. The following describes only the mailing lists and newsgroups relevant to using WWW at SLAC. This page is not a general introduction to Mailing List Server and USENET applications.

SLAC Mailing Lists on WWW

With a Mailing List Server, you subscribe your electronic address to a named group of electronic addresses that is used by its members to discuss a common interest, such as the Web, via email. Afterwards, you will periodically receive topical notes from that list. A list may be open, anyone may join, or closed, membership is limited to a special interest group controlled by the list's owner. You may usually send email ("post") to a list, too.

See Mailing Lists for Subscribers for more details about the Mailing List Server SLAC uses named Majordomo. A few lists are directly available on the Web via the Mailing List WWW Gateway named LWGate.

Here are the WWW-related mailing lists at SLAC:

www-l@slac.stanford.edu
For discussing WWW design and status issues. Subscription to the list is open. See the Information summary, where you may fill out a form to subscribe, or check out the www-l archives.

www-admin@slac.stanford.edu
For AFS WWW production space requests, undelivered email, and problem reporting. Subscription to the list is closed. If you need help with some aspect of the Web, you should go to your Web Support Coordinator (WSC) or the Help Desk in the lobby of the Computer Group Building (the HELP Desk is also available through extension HELP or email help@slac.stanford.edu). If they are unable to resolve a problem, they will post it to www-admin.

www-tech@slac.stanford.edu
For the WWW Technical Committee (mostly a subset of www-l), used for meeting and other announcements, discussion of work items, possible future directions, etc. Subscription to the list is open. See the Information summary, where you may fill out a form to subscribe, or check out the www-tech archives.

wsc@slac.stanford.edu
For communication among the Web Support Coordinators (WSCs). Subscription to this list is closed. You are, however, encouraged to bring questions and comments about using the Web and authoring SLAC pages to your WSC. You may also communicate directly with all the WSCs by sending email to wsc@slac.stanford.edu.

www-cc@slac.stanford.edu
For members of the WWW Coordinating Committee. Subscription to the list is closed. You are, however, encouraged to raise concerns, questions, and suggestions with your division member on this committee. You may also communicate directly with the whole committee by sending email to www-cc@slac.stanford.edu.

SLAC USENET Newsgroup on WWW

With USENET, you may read items on a named subject like slac.www.general through USENET (sometimes called Netnews) viewing software. One way to see USENET news is through Netscape and other WWW browsers. You may also send email ("post") to a newsgroup.

Here is the WWW-related newsgroup at SLAC:

slac.www.general
For discussing WWW design and status issues. Here's a summary of items that have been posted to slac.www.general as displayed by your current Web browser.
All items posted to either the list www-l or the newsgroup slac.www.general are also cross-posted to the opposite collection, so that people may view the items according to their preferred style.
