Installing ping_data.pl and traceroute.pl for PingER2

Install ping_data.pl

Ping_data.pl is a script that allows the collecting site to get the data from your site. ping_data.pl does not have to be installed on the same machine as pinger.pl (the script that makes the ping probe measurements), but the data file and the config files generated by pinger2.pl must be visible on the machine running ping_data.pl, possibly via NFS or AFS.

• Get ping_data.pl and put it in the CGI directory for your HTTP server (often /usr/local/cgi-bin or /usr/lib/cgi-bin)
• You may already have cgi-lib.pl in your CGI directory. If not, put it there now.
• Note: the following section(click the button) should be consulted ONLY if you have changed any of the default values for PingER2. Otherwise skip to the next point.
  In ping_data.pl:
  • Edit the line:
    
    my $cgi_lib="";
    to read:
    
    my $cgi_lib = "<cgi-path>/cgi-lib.pl";
    
    where <cgi-path> is the fully qualified path to your cgi-bin directory. You only need to change this, if you cgi-path is any other than one of the following:
    • /afs/slac/g/www/cgi-lib/cgi-lib.pl
    • /usr/local/cgi-bin/cgi-lib.pl
  • Edit the line:
    
    my $stats_dir = "";
    
    to read:
    
    my $stats_dir = "<dir>/data";
    
    where <dir> is the directory where your PingER data is stored. You only need to make this change if your PingER data storage directory is any other than one of the following:
    • /nfs/slac/g/net/pinger/pinger_mon_data/
    • /usr/local/share/pinger/data [Default: PingER2]
  • Edit the line:
    
    my $sites_fn = "";
    
    to read:
    
    my $sites_fn = "<dir>/beacons.txt";
    
    where <dir> is the directory where PingER2 data is stored. You only need to make this change if your PingER data storage directory is any other than one of the following:
    • /afs/slac/www/comp/net/mon/offsite.nodes
    • /usr/local/share/pinger/beacons.txt [Default: PingER2]
  • Edit the line:
    
    my $pinger_xml_file = "";
    
    to read
    
    my $pinger_xml_file = "<dir>/pinger.xml";
    
    You Only Need to make this change if pinger.xml[PingER2] or offsite.nodes[PingER1] file, is none of the following:
    • /usr/local/share/pinger/pinger.xml
    • /afs/slac/www/comp/net/mon/offsite.nodes
  • Edit the line:
    
    my $std_cron_out_file = "/usr/local/share/pinger/pingerCronStat.stdout";
    my $std_cron_err_file = "/usr/local/share/pinger/pingerCronStat.stderr";
    
    to point to the correct Path for Cron Output file and Cron Error File for Pinger2.
• Make ping_data.pl and cgi-lib.pl executable with the command
chmod a+x ping_data.pl cgi-lib.pl
• Test the script by visiting the URL http://yourwebserver/cgi-bin/ping_data.pl. A form should be shown allowing you to retrieve the raw data.

Install a Traceroute Server

While not strictly required for network monitoring, we are requesting that all collecting sites install a traceroute server.

• Put traceroute.pl in your CGI directory (often /usr/local/cgi-bin or /usr/lib/cgi-bin).
• Make it executable with the command
• chmod a+x traceroute.pl
• Test it by loading the URL http://yourwebserver/cgi-bin/traceroute.pl.
