PEP-II Commissioning Update July 16, 1998

This morning, after five hectic days of commissioning, the PEP-II Low Energy Ring (LER) stored a 1 mA beam of positrons (July 16 at 4 am). Thus far, the only anomaly was a single reversed polarity quadrupole that was found and fixed over the weekend. The machine tunes fell within 0.05 of their calculated values. The charge was distributed over 12 equally spaced bunches. The single bunch current limit was about 0.5 mA (too soon to know what the limit really is). The synchrotron tune was 0.015 with one RF station and 0.024 with two stations. The beam lifetime was about half a minute due to vacuum pressure (not all the pumps are turned on).

The High Energy Ring (HER) has recently been doing beam-based alignment studies in the interaction region. Both HER and LER beams were stored simultaneously. Interaction region bunch timing studies will be done soon.

Our congratulations to all of the hard-working LER commissioning team for this extraordinary effort.

Michael Zisman, Tom Himel, and John Seeman
