PEP-II Commissioning Update July 14

The first weekend of combined HER/LER commissioning has gone incredibly well. Within 5 hours of tunnel lockup both rings had beam half way around the ring. The HER accomplished this 15 minutes before the LER, but after all they had done it before. Only one corrector was needed to get the LER beam that far.

Each ring then improved their setup before taking beam through the newly constructed (i.e. different even for the HER) and delicate (background detectors) IR2 (interaction region). BPMs were timed in, steering done etc.

By Monday morning the HER had stored beam with a 5 minute lifetime. The LER had 3 turns. Progress has been very rapid.

By Tuesday morning July 14, the HER had a 20 minute lifetime which is vacuum dominated. All HER parameters look good: betas, tunes, chromaticities, and apertures. Up to 12 mA total had been stored.

By Tuesday morning the LER had up to 9 turns. We are now tuning injection parameters and steering the orbit. The RF system is just starting to affect the number of turns.

Even with the rush at the end to finish, the high quality workmanship of everone who built the accelerators was not compromised. We can all be proud of a job well done.
