Hello PEP-II people and friends,

Just a note to say where we are as of Friday afternoon June 6.

Following getting the HER vacuum completed as of May 31 and getting two turns on Tuesday morning June 3, we have commissioned almost continuously.

The "obstruction" in IR6 which limited the beam on Tuesday was found to be a shorted quadrupole lead and was cleared by Wednesday afternoon.

By Thursday June 5 at 6:30 am the HER team led by Uli Wienands managed to get 13 turns without RF and 275 turns with RF. Only a handful of correctors were needed.

By Thursday evening at 10:30 pm 24,500 turns were observed after tuning the RF phases, ring tunes, and injection conditions and steering the orbit.

By Friday June 6 (noon) about 55k turns (400 msec store) were obtained with a better injection setup and tune optimization.

At the present a lattice is being installed which has the insertion quadrupoles turned on. They were off for all of the above. In addition, we are starting to measure the betatron and synchrotron tunes.

We are also pleased that both the accelerator and injection seem quite stable and have been more reliable than we expected at this stage.

Saturday:
By Saturday noon June 7 the HER team got 1 second capture of the beam which is about 136000 turns. Work continues on increasing the lifetime.

Thanks again to all. It's been fun.

Cheers, John
