Subject: First beam captured in the HER

Today, Thursday June 5, at 6:30am, about 270 turns of the beam in the HER were achieved, after we successfully diagnosed and repaired an apparent aperture restriction in Arc 5 yesterday (turned out to be a partially shortened quad). The number of turns prooves the operation of the rf system; without rf the beam stays in for only about 13 turns (close to expectation).

This is a tremendous success, especially as we are still running without the insertion quads. It should also be noted that we still don't get to exercise our correctors in any significant way: only a handful are used to get us through IR 2. Kudos again to Precision Alignment! I'd also like to emphasize that our diagnostics (BPM, BLM) and controls are working smoothly, which contributes immensely to our advancing so rapidly.

We'll work towards achieving the final commissioning IR 2 setup now, as well as commissioning more diagnostics and improving the beam lifetime. So far, the ring responds very well and we should all look forward to more progress soon.

So far it's been a Great Run!!

Uli
