PEP-II Update March 6, 2000
During the
accelerator machine development day last week, the LER wiggler was turned off as
a test. Turning off the wiggler lowers the LER horizontal emittance from 49 to
23 nm. The vertical emittance is similarly reduced.
The resulting overlap beam sizes at the interaction region (cap-sigmas)
at low currents were reduced from 7 to 6.1 microns vertically and from 220 to
about 205 microns horizontally. A decision was made to collide with these
conditions.
On Sunday March 5,
2000, a new luminosity record of 1.694E33/cm**2/s
was achieved with 703 mA of electrons on 854 mA of positrons in 829
bunches. Integrated luminosities of
33.4 /pb in one eight hour shift and 86.9 /pb in three consecutive shifts have
been delivered by PEP-II.
