PEP-II Commissioning Update January 26, 1998:

The HER commissioning has concentrated over the past few days on high current operation and background measurements. The LER injection tests have concentrated on R12 (BPM vs corrector) measurements.

With five HER RF stations in operation with all RF feedback loops working including the comb loops and with the transverse feedback system running, 490 mA in 1658 bunches was achieved Saturday morning January 24. Later that day the chromaticity was increased from the nominal +1 values to +6 and +9. This allowed 549 mA to be stored in 1658 bunches. The beam was very stable at about 520 mA but showed a little transverse motion at 549 mA. This passes our goal for this run of 500 mA. At this current the arc copper vacuum chambers increase in temperature about 10 degrees F and the bellows convolutions about 1.5 degrees F. So far so good.

A correction to my last note: Mike Zelazny has done most of the work on the 1024 turn BPM measurement software which is working so well allowing us to measure beam betas around the ring in real time. Thanks Mike.

Our run is tentatively scheduled to end January 31. A final update then.
