Workbook for BaBar Offline Users - Printable Version

It was originally intended that the Workbook would be written in a format that allows the simultaneous maintenance of online and printable versions. However we have been unable to find such a format that does not detract from the functionality of the online version.

We explored the use of LaTex, which could create a printable version via postscript and an online version via the LaTex2HTML translator. This format was recommended by the BaBar Documentation, Communication and Information Task Force. But the URLs created by the LaTex2HTML translator were not satisfactory in that

  • they are not reader friendly, naming documents via long strings of numbers such as ".../node12.html#SECTION00410000000000000000".
  • they are not constant. If one adds a new section to the middle of the document, the urls of all subsequent sections are changed rendering bookmarks or outside links to the Workbook unusable.

Approaches such as LaTex2HTML go about things the wrong way for a primarily online document such as the Workbook. They have one first write a printable document and then convert this to html. The html suffers in the process. Better results could be expected form a system that has one first write an html document and then reformat that for printing, but we currently know of no such system (suggestions are welcome).

Test printable version

There is now a preliminary printable version of the workbook available, which currently prints principal chapters of the workbook in alphabetical order. You can access the printable version by following this link.

Warning: this printable version is 200 pages long! Further, this version doesn't include the other sections in the workbook, only pages called workbook/name/name.html - not pages called workbook/name/anothername.html.

Feedback and comments on this printable version will be most welcome. Pleas email kiwi@slac.stanford.edu with comments.
