BaBar L1 Drift Chamber Trigger Upgrade Final Design Review ========================================================== April 11, 2003 SLAC Review committee members: ------------------------- Andy Lankford (UC Irvine, Chair) Chris Bebek (LBNL) John Fox (Stanford/SLAC) Armin Karcher (LBNL) Gunther Haller (SLAC) Chris Hearty (UBC) Ex officio members: Walt Innes (SLAC) Bill Wisniewski (SLAC) Charge to the Review Committee: ------------------------------- The BaBar Level 1 Drift Chamber Trigger upgrade project consists of a new set of Track Segment Finders (TSF), Z-Pt Discriminators (ZPD) and 3 types of interface boards. The cenceptual design of this upgrade was reviewed in September, 2001. Since we did not have a preliminary design review, this review will combine partially the function of PDR into this FDR. At this review, the Committee should consider whether the engineering designs meet the requirement and testing of the prototype modules have demonstrated that the components are ready for fabrication of production units. The committee should investigate these areas: (1) Do the actual design implementation updated from CDR meet the algorithm performance requirement ? (2) Are the engineering design choices optimal and robust ? (3) Prototype testing of the algorithms and other functions of the modules satisfactory ? (4) Prototype testing of all internal and external interfaces satisfactory ? (5) The proposed plan for testing and validating the production units reasonable ? This review is scheduled somewhat earlier than the normal expected level of prototype testing is done for some of the components (especially the TSF), in order to avoid any delay between test completion and production startup, to allow the commissioning to benefit from the last month of colliding beams in this run. The most important outcome from the review should be an explicit list of tests and design changes the review committee consider essential to be satisfactorily addressed before the board production can commence. This `essential issue' list should be initially drafted by the upgrade team and iterated during the review to include suggestions from the committee and come to an agreed list at the end of the review. Upon completion of addressing the essential issues for each component, the trigger upgrade team will inform the result to the review committee and BaBar management via E-mail to seek an agreement to proceed with the production of that component immediately. The committee is expected to submit an informal 2-page report to the management including all issues besides the 'essential list' by Apr/21/03, after giving the Drift Chamber Trigger team an opportunity to make factual corrections or clarifications.
