Trigger Board Front Panels

Displays

The trigger board front panels generally have a set of LEDs indicating the board status mostly from the CSR bits in the fast control logic. These displays have proven to be very useful for the board testing and commissioning. An example of the existing TSF front panel can be seen at the following picture. For an example of what signals are wired to the front panel LEDs, see e.g. the GLT schematics at the FDR page, for the fp_led schematics.

Mechanical

Most VME boards made at SLAC are following a similar procedure. The front panel kit is purchased (e.g. Elma Electronics product) which include the standard blank front panel with just a few holes at standard locations. A SLAC layout person does the design/layout for the front panel and the silkscreen is given to a local vendor (ADEM LLC) who anodize and front panel, punching additional holes, engrave all lables etc. It is especially important to make sure we have th right latch for board insertion and release.

The 9U front panel kit comes from Elma Electronics. Their website is not particularly well organized, nor does it have a complete listing of their products. For ZPD boards, the purchased parts were:

  • 21N-904-41 : Front Panel
  • 63-371 : Injector/Ejector Kit for one panel
  • 63-480 : retainers and screws for 5 front panels
A more inclusive kit pack used for interface boards:
  • 63-469 : Injector/Ejector and FP retainer + screws for one panel
Other combinations of kits are also available. Contact Elma for part numbers. The detailed information on the various card accessory information can be found at here: Front panels, Latches. The relevant pages are extracted here: Front panel, Latches, Latch-panel mount, where you can check the actual mechanical information. Note that the recommended latch type is the IEC standard injector/ejector handle 63-359, but that particular kit is missing the panel-latch mounting retainer piece of 63-366. The kit used for ZPD and intreface boards are various combinations of the pieces from these items.

For the full front panel decoration: A small company in Santa Clara, ADEM LLC, Jacob Obolsky, 408-727-8955, http://web.www.admllc.com. They typically charge ~$40 per panel.
