Minutes of Level 3 Trigger Meeting, 09 December 1997

Attendees: Cathy Cretsinger, Gregory Dubois-Felsmann, Al Eisner, Ed Frank, Larry Gladney, Fred Kral, Vivek Suraiya, Songhoon Yang

[Agenda]

Action items from last meeting

  1. Code testing:
Cathy ran the L3Dch algorithm integrated with L3Master on a test run as a first step toward establishing a zeroth-level benchmark, but got very low tracking efficiencies.
  2. Background Mixing Studies
Anders gave a preliminary look at Ed's background mixing study event sample. Distributions from the L3Dch algorithm look fine. A large chunk of the background mixing runs will take place this week and weekend.
  3. Trigger Production re-run:
The recon group is interested in including backgrounds in the runs for Mock Data Challenge 2. It appears as though their interest overlap those of the L3 group. Also, CPU resources for re-doing the run are readily available now, but may not be in the future when recon work is in full gear. Our problem is that the TURTLE rays are now obsolete for this sample. Before deciding on a date for re-doing this production, we form a 3-step plan of action: Ed will talk to members of the simulation group to see if we can get their help in doing the run, Fred will explore getting new TURTLE rays created, Larry will then check with Bob Jacobsen to see what responsibilities the Recon group is willing to share with L3.
  4. Milestones Discussion:
Several new milestones were added to the list before the meeting, largely as a result of suggestions from Al. One of the milestones, "Breadboard design for measuring acceptances..." was split into two milestones at Cathy's suggestion. Much other discussion occurred in deciding on dates. Please consult the list of milestones to appear in a button off the L3 Web page for the most up-to-date listing. Here, we will only summarize some significant issues raised during the meeting.
    1. We need to get efficiencies vs. kinematic variables for our benchmark processes. This is preparatory for pursuing physics studies.
    2. The background for one-prong events may be large. We need to form some method for estimating how large. Since the physics is difficult to model reliably, we probably need to get measurements from past experiments in order to form an estimate. Ralph Miller and/or Dan Bauer should be consulted.
    3. Algorithms should get their configuration data from the configuration database via the standard key or time stamp. This should be close enough to the final system by mid-January that it can be used very soon for L3 algorithms that use configuration information.
    4. We need to press on groups to deliver the digi <-> tagged container code for SVT, DCH, L1E, L1T, L1G, EMC, and FCT digi -> transition object. Gregory has been and will continue to press groups to deliver these. We may be able to set a date of 1/21/98 for delivery.
    5. We are stuck at release versions below 5.3 due to the inability for Dch geometry code to handle data generated during last year's trigger run. The L3Dch code has no problem running at 5.3 and beyond once new data is generated, but for now we are stuck at 5.2.2.
    6. Preliminary L3 output lines can be defined by next week (needed by OEP for the pre-scaler).
    7. The API for error-handling is not signed-off yet. Current means of error-handling are alright for testing purposes.

Other Business

  1. Look for an updated milestone list early next week.

Please send corrections or amplifications to Larry.

The next phone meeting will be on 18 December at the usual time.
