DIRC: How To Deal With Black and Brown Outs
Brown Out
- Page the DIRC Commissioner (846-0545) but continue with
the following steps even before he/she calls back:
- From the main BaBar epics pannel click on DRC to open the DRC Slow Control Monitor.
- Click the "on/off" button at the lower right which opens a new window the
Dirc Power Screen.
This screen is used to turn the whole DIRC on or off. For turning DIRC on
you work your way from the top to the bottom, for turning it off from the bottom to the top.
- For a brown out the only thing which should be turned off is the DIRC phototube HV.
At point 3c) "Turn HV on" press the off button.
The 12 green control lights should turn red after a little while.
- To completely turn off the HV power supplies go to the electronics house
ground floor racks 05 and 06 and key the CAEN supplies off. This will cause the drc-hv IOC to complain about
high CPU load. This is nothing to worry about. The DIRC commissioner should however turn off the drc-hv IOC too.
Note! When turning the HV back on (1- switch key to ON on the LOCAL side, 2- swich on (or reboot) drc-hv IOC, 3- turn HV on in EPICS)
crate4 card3 will trip because it has forgotten its current-limit setting. Set IORD to 2200 by hand, and press on again.

- Turn off the DIRC chiller in the far corner of the IR-2 hall
- That's it
- The FEE crates are still connected to power, so that they can be turned on remotely again.
They can only be switched off by breaking the breaker.
Since now the chiller has been turned off be prepaired for temperature alarms after 2 hours.
There is no reason to worry.
- The VME crates housing the DIRC IOCs can be turned off at the Run Coordinators discretion
(nice way to get rid of temperature alarms)
- Power for the safety sytem for the SoB is coming from an UPS, so there is no need
to worry about dumping the water (as long as the power outage is shorter than 1 day)
- By now your friendly DIRC commissioner should have arrived and will answer any open questions
Note! When turning the HV back on (1- switch key to ON on the LOCAL side, 2- swich on (or reboot) drc-hv IOC, 3- turn HV on in EPICS)
