Goal of this page
This page is intended to maintain instructions on how to access the SLAC silo tapes and a database of the Dch test data files

Dch test data tapes

The SLAC silo tapes, containing data sets of general interest to collaborators, are available through the staging system. There's a detailed WEB page describing how to use the staging system. Here are some basic instructions which you should read carefully.

TAPES

At the moment we have allocated 3 silo tapes: QX0158, QX0159 and QX0160. Please, when you add a data file to these tapes update this page with some information about what the new file contains and who copied it. When you add a new file check carefully the database of the tape in this page to see what is the next free position on tape and then update the database!!

How to add a data file to a tape

If you have to transfer a file from a remote site and you don't have enough disk space on your disk, do the following steps:

  • login to tapeserv1 machine at SLAC
  • check if there's enough space in the following disks (/u1, /u2, /u3)
  • transfer the file from your remote site, using ftp, to the selected disk area

Once you have done the previous steps, or if your file is already at SLAC and in your current directory, write the file to tape with the following command:

where the block characters indicate the parameters you have to specify

  • TAPENAME: the name of one of the tapes allocated to us
  • POSITION: the (ordered) position on the tape of the file, i.e. the nthfile on tape
  • SIZE: the size of the file (in MB)
  • FILE: write FILE as a header on the silo tape
  • FILENAME: the file you want to save
  • OUT: symbolic link to stageing area for writing

You can also proceed in a different way:

  • login to a morgan machine at SLAC
  • allocate some space for your file in the stage area:
  • stageout -VTAPENAME -lsl -FF -L32400 -qPOSITION -sSIZE -fFILE OUT
    
  • ftp to the machine on which you have the tape
  • get the file
  • ftp> get FILENAME OUT
    
  • write the file to tape
  • stageput FILENAME
    

With both procedures the output on the screen after writing the file should look like this:

STG85 - data compression ratio = 1.3, currently 17% into tape QX0158 on tp126

After uccessfully writing to the tape, clean up the disk if tapeserv1 was used.

How to access a staged file

To stagein the file you need the steps are quite simple:

  1. log on to a morgan machine
  2. issue the stagein command:

where the parameters are the same for the stagewrt command. At this point in the current directory you will have a soft link (FILENAME) to the file you requested.
