BaBar Prototype II Drift Chamber
Current Configuration
Last modified: 30 September 2002, M. Kelsey
The Prototype II drift chamber (Proto
II) is a full-scale mockup of the BaBar Drift Chamber, covering a
narrow angular region (1/8, 45°) of the first four superlayers.
This document describes the current software and hardware configuration,
including database configuration keys, software release, etc. This
information is useful for running Proto II for data-taking and calibrations.
Upgrades to this configuration can be done following the software setup instructions, and should be
documented here.
In April 2002, a new test-stand, covering two full wedges of front-end
electornics has been build onto the support frame of Prototype II. This
setup is projected to be linked with a spare Master Crate to the trigger
group's test stand for joint DCH-DCT testing and troubleshooting. This new
test stand has a separate DataFlow area (platform 27) and a separate test
release area.
Proto II Test Release
The operations area for Proto II is
$BFROOT/detector/dch/DchProto2/, and is based on Online Release
7.0.16. It has the following additional packages checked out
DchCalOdf V00-05-03
DchCalOnline V00-02-21
DchCalScripts V00-01-14
DchOdf V00-05-02-02
DchOepApps V00-02-09
DchOnline V00-08-04
DchTestStand V00-04-02
Every time you log on, you must configure your environment for Proto II
operations. From the above directory, execute
source DchTestStand/setup.csh
DCH/Trigger Test Release
The operations area for the combined test stand is
$BFROOT/detector/dch/DchTrigger/, and is based on Online Release
7.0.16. It has the following additional packages checked out
DchCalOdf V00-06-01
DchCalOnline V00-02-22
DchCalScripts MHK-20020927 (V00-02-02)

DchTestStand V00-04-09
Every time you log on, you must configure your environment for
operations. From the above directory, execute
source DchTestStand/setup.csh
As described in the hardware
documentation, both the ROM and DIOM must be set up to self-identify as
the same "quadrant," as though they were installed on the real chamber.
Currently, we are reading out Prototype II as Quadrant 1,
wedges 4 and 5.
Following the setup instructions, several
configuration keys have been made for calibrations and for data-taking. The
current keys, for use with the chamber in Quadrant 1, are

Electronic Calibration
The Proto II "test bench" calibration data, used for validation, is
labBoxSetup/pro010810.cal, and covers FEA's #117 and #103 in
all four possible quadrants.
There has not yet been a validated calibration of Proto II. A "test"
validation, pro0, was extracted from DCH calibration
cal1735, but obviously is based on different FEAs.
Scintillator Trigger Settings
The Prototype II trigger consists of a three-fold coincidence of
scintillator paddles, one above the chamber, one immediately below, and one
below a 62 cm steel range stack. The PMT voltages, discriminator thresholds
and widths are set to
| Voltage | Threshold (mV) |
Width (ns) |
| T1 | 1900 | 40 | 24 |
| T2 | 2000 | 40 | 52 |
| T3 | 2050 | 40 | 72 |
High Voltage Settings
Proto II should be run with the same wire voltages as the real drift
chamber, 1930V on the sense wires, 335V on the guard wires, and 870V on the
zipper wires.
These voltages must be set while manually ramping up the Bertan power
supplies, as described in the Data Taking.
