It is prudent to plan for somewhere between 5-10 times more than the nominal background that we anticipated in the TDR. The need for someone to coordinate such a plan was discussed at the last Technical Board Meeting. Babar Management has created the position of Background Remediation Coordinator (BRC) to deal with this. I am most pleased to announce that Guy Wormser has enthusiastically accepted this post. Guy will naturally work very closely with a) the Mattison Background group (and in particular with Teri Geld's Monte Carlo effort), b) with the Physics Coordinators, with the Run Coordinators, and c) with the System Managers. The general areas of concern for the BRC will be: 1) Helping to update the TDR occupancy and radiation dose tables 2) Coordinating the Systems (including the trigger and dataflow) to study in detail the impact of the backgrounds on their hardware, and if needed to develop solutions to remediate the impact 3) Coordinating the Systems and reconstruction folks to study in detail the impact of the backgrounds on the system software algorithms, and if needed to develop work-arounds which minimize the deterioration of system performance 4) Helping the Physics Coordinators to study and develop remediation techniques for particular physics channels 5) Help the Systems to evolve the resources and capabilities to provide active feedback and detection of machine-related backgrounds in the post April 99 era, so that Babar becomes an adequate replacement for the present suite of background detectors. To develop with Tom Mattison, in coordination with the Operations Group, a system of liaisons who will have a 24-hour presence in the machine control room. Please give Guy the support he will need to make this aspect of our program a major success. Please forward this note to your colleagues who should be made aware of Guy's new role.
