Feedback on the trial version of the new BaBar web

This page is kept for historical purposes only!!!

Outstanding Problems and envisaged solutions:

BaBarian Outstanding Problem Solution?
Ulrik Egede and Tim Adye Painful access to new web across a slow link and whole page has to load before any text is visible - related to the way the text is encapsulated in a table. This could be solved using the RAL mirror but the slow download is annoying...
Charlie Young Sometimes no highlighting in sidebars when there should be. This is due to the way our script compares a file's name with the sidebar elements. We are investigating an improved method of doing this.
Charlie Young Links in QA pages don't work. Under investigation.
Nicholas Savvas Link to Simulation from Computing page doesn't work. Under investigation. Something to do with the frames I think.

Known Problems with known solutions:

BaBarian Known Problem Solution
Fred Kral The link to "LIGHT" is broken. Fixed when web copied to SLAC server.
Johannes Bauer /www/Detector/Calorimeter/crystal_dbase/ here the third link "Grid of Crystals' Neighbors" is not functional
/www/Detector/Calorimeter/crystal_dbase/ here field for "Crystals by Type" not functional; error regarding /cgi-wrap/
/www/Detector/Calorimeter/crystal_dbase/summary/ gives error message regarding /cgi-wrap/
/www/Detector/Calorimeter/crystal_dbase/crystlinfo.html is not functional; gives error message regarding /cgi-wrap/
/www/Detector/Calorimeter/crystal_dbase/barcodes.html is not functional since buttons are missing
cgi scripts not on qmw01 server.
Steve McMahon, Jean Roy and Shrihari Gopalakrishna BaBar notes search engine doesn't work. Again due to fact that cgi scripts are not on the qmw01 server.
Joseph Perl I also find it confusingly non-parallel to have the words "test the web" in that space when one looks at the home page. The "test the web" blurb on the temporary homepage was put there to replace the sidebar heading with something relevant but I will change this for the full release.
Ray Cowan, Mike Sokoloff, Tiehui Liu, Sophie Versille, Jeff Richman, Theresa Champion, Ben Brau, Terry Geld, Christopher Hearty, Ralph Mueller-Pfefferkorn, Marie-Helene Schune and Frank Porter Some pages are missing or out-of-date on the new web. All pages are out-of-date but will be updated for the final release.
Anders Ryd Links pointing to the generator web page are broken. Missing directory now inserted and the locations database will be updated.
John Bartelt The "Prompt Reco" links on the Online Computing page do not work. Missing location file now inserted.
Charlie Young Employment opportunities directory listing precedes the README explanation. Due to server settings - will be okay on SLAC server.

Solved Problems with solutions:

BaBarian Solved Problems Solution
Al Eisner and Jack L. Harris one thing I don't see which was easily accessible on the old web (right at the top) is the "People" entry. Have added this link!
David MacFarlane The new web site has an interesting rendition of the transferred drift chamber pages, which you may want to have a look at (at least in IE5). The yellow scrolling background is only supposed to apply to the very top line. This was due to the use of a <MARQUEE> tag which FrontPage failed to close with a </MARQUEE> tag. (These non-standard tags only affect IE browsers except when the closing tag is omitted!) The original page on the SLAC server as well as the QMW01 wrapped version have been corrected.
Johannes Bauer /Detector/Calorimeter/crystal_dbase/ has tables misaligned Due to varying numbers of columns in the table within original HTML source. The tables have been corrected on SLAC and QMW01 servers.
Johannes Bauer About 600 pages should be reachable from /Detector/Calorimeter/crystal_dbase/uniformity/ but they are not. Solved by copying over original SLAC files to new location on QMW01.
Johannes Bauer ../Calorimeter/crystal_dbase/miscellaneous/ is partly missing Due to a missing comment-close (i.e. -->) which has now been inserted.
Paul Harrison The title "BaBar Physics" is a little inferior on the top-level Physics page. Also that nice picture of an event does not appear. Event picture copied to Physics directory.
Charlie Young and Paul Harrison 1st Year Physics page not wrapped and has broken links. Due to bad HTML such as missing </a> tags and links not being in quotes - i.e. <a href=filename> instead of <a href="filename">. Now fixed by Roland Waldi.
Pete Sanders There used to be an Electronics subsystem type where we kept our web pages - but now I cannot find these. DAQ subsystem is now called Electronics.
Sophie Versille Tagging Physics Tool Group Homepage gives an error message. Now fixed (Due to weird .htaccess file)
Lenny Kissel Missing Collaboration Meeting information Now there (and bad html corrected on both servers).
Ulrik Egede and Tim Adye. Back button doesn't return to same point on previous page. Not a problem with the web but with some browsers.
Charlie Young The number of results allegedly returned by the search engine is more than the actual number of search results. The reason for this is the fact that we specify a directory to search under in the search box which leads to the number of search results being equal to the number of searchable files below the given directory.
Charlie Young Access to ../Physics/Analysis/An_princ.txt denied. Fixed by resetting file permissions.
Charlie Young Physics Engineering page not on server. It is now.
Charlie Young Magnet homepage not wrapped. Due to invalid <TTTT> tag in source HTML.
Charlie Young and Bob Jacobsen Bad colours for the 1st Year Physics pages. Now changed on original server.
Charlie Young The list in BaBar_Admin_WWW.html has a strange numerical ordering. Now fixed - was due to the strange way the list was created in the original HTML.
Charlie Young Broken links to LIGHT documentation. Now using correct link.
Charlie Young IR homepage has an unnecessary search engine. Now removed.
Urs Langenegger and Mauro Morandin Link to new web from old homepage doesn't work. It does now.
Ivo Eschrich Trouble getting to documentation; for example detector -> electronics -> emc gives a 'not found' error. Temporary fix using a softlink making electronics -> DAQ. This soflink will be removed and the links corrected in final release.
Uriel Nauenberg and Ivo Eschrich The search engine reports license problems. Now solved by Bebo White.
Mike Sokoloff The link under HEP Conferences and Workshops to a "suggestion form" points to a page saying "The page you are looking for has been deleted". The link has now been fixed but I'm not sure what caused the problem just yet. I found some faulty HTML in these pages which I've corrected at the source, which may have caused the problem. There is also a problem with missing images which we will address.
Sophie Versille A problem with the QMW01 Cornelius++ web page compared with the SLAC version. This was due to rogue <DD> and </DD> tags in the original HTML source which confused our wrapping program. The source file has been corrected and the QMW01 copy will be updated.
Walter Innes The DCH electronics page had its file name changed from DCelectronics.html to index.html. This change was not reflected in the Electronics page. This was a broken link in the old web which I've now fixed.
Walter Innes The Monthly and Quarterly Electronics report links don't work from the new web. Explicit links to directories were not being correctly changed but the problem has now been fixed.
Jens Brose The last topic of the new BABAR Calorimeter web page contains dead links only. The reason for the broken links was partly due to the fact that you keep your images in your area which are not visible from our temporary server on QMW01. Also you had some links to icons which you no longer have in your area and this confused one of my scripts.
Ralph Mueller-Pfefferkorn and Jane Tinslay EMC software page index.html file is no longer there. The soft link index.html->software.html was removed in the clean-up but we have now renamed software.html to index.html.
Francesco Forti Some SVT files forbid access. Now fixed. We had only reset permissions on html files.
Charlie Young Highlighting of inappropriate elements in sidebar. Now fixed.
Ray Cowan Links to objectivity database pages returns "The requested URL ..style.css was not found" and then the back button doesn't work! Now fixed. We had not corrected .htm files in our restructuring procedure.
Charlie Young and Jim Smith Links in Database pages don't work. Now fixed. We had not corrected .htm files in our restructuring procedure.
Neil Geddes On the new web there is no easy way to switch between using the copy at SLAC and the mirror at RAL. There is now. You can click a button to get to the particular page on either server.
Charlotte Hee The secretary informed me that on our new web, under "Organization" that the link "meetings" shows the collaboration meetings not the organization meetings so should be moved to "Collaboration". Can you make this change easily? If not, don't worry about it. Now done.
Joseph Perl I notice that an item that is really the title of the sidebar appears as the third row of the top bar (to the left of the elephant). This was to save space but now replaced by SLAC <-> RAL button.
Ray Rodriguez There is only a "B" on the page when I load in my .htm files. We deleted all the slashes in .htm files by mistake but we managed to reconstruct them.

Comments and responses:

BaBarian Comments Response
Lenny Kissel Repetition. There also appears to be a lot of duplication, e.g., publications. Some repetition is necessary because different persons view the web differently but some of the repetition is indeed superfluous and will be dealt with.
Lenny Kissel and Charlotte Hee Color scheme. Perhaps the colors can be changed or limited--say replace the purple background with black or dark blue, maybe. The colors just don't work for me. The colors can be changed easily but I'll wait on other comments.
David Hitlin, Uriel Nauenberg and James Panetta The new organization is good, but the aesthetics are lacking. This is especially true of the new Home Page. We need to pay some attention to having the look be inviting, as well as well-organized. There will be a new homepage with hot news and a few items with the existing new homepage becoming a sitemap.
Tim Adye The new pages look much nicer and should be much easier to use but the sidebars can be incorrectly sized in Netscape 2 and 3 due to differing font sizes, and they cause unnecessary narrowing of the rest of the text. Different browsers and terminals have different font settings so our sidebars assume the biggest font is in use - specifying a specific font size does not guarantee results.
Charlie Young Inappropriate and useless graphics in: I quite agree.
Charlie Young DCH homepage has a wrapper within a wrapper. The author doesn't mind and neither do I for now.
Charlie Young Unexpected link of How-to to Forum. It's the nearest there is to a Physics How-to.
Fernando Ferroni I do not like the change of colors of the Physics Page. The wrapping that occurs in the new web causes each page to have a standard white background. Thus, certain font colors and table colors do not fit in with the new scheme of things. Colors are important; there have been many complaints about the original colors of the Physics pages and until now only positive responses to the new color-scheme.
Uriel Nauenberg The glossary does not have correct links to new pages. It is currently incomplete so I have made this clear on the page.
Gerald Eigen and Bill Wisniewski Too much information is cranked on too little space on the new web page, making it worse to locate things. In the old web page there were headlines in different color and size. The individual items had a bullet and were spread out over more space. This made it easier to spot items. The new homepage is only temporary.
Charlie Young Pages under /BFROOT/doc/ and /BFROOT/www/Computing/WebTeamPages/ are not wrapped. This was intentional.
Walter Innes The BFMAIL archive links no longer work form either the old or new webs. Only some BFMAIL groups are archived.
Ralph Mueller-Pfefferkorn I would like to keep the background for the EMC software page. For the time being at least we will not have backgrounds in the new web's pages.
John Andress Can't find .tcl files using the search engine. Searchable web files are either pdf files or html files, nothing else.
Ray Rodriguez The Electronics infrastructure pages should not be wrappped as they are written documentation. I agree. We can make certain directories exempt from the wrapping procedure and yours is a prime candidate.
Jane Tinslay I like the new home page! Cool. Thanks!

Suggestions and responses:

BaBarian Suggestions Response
Fred Kral Substitute Electronics for DAQ in the Detector site map. DAQ is ambiguous with DataFlow, and Electronics was the name we used for the construction era. Now done.
Fred Kral Trigger to be added to the list of detector sub-systems on the front page. /BFROOT/www/Dectector/Trigger/ Now done.
Tim Adye small link space on each page's navigation bar saying something like "Goto this page at: SLAC - RAL". Good idea.
Anna Pacheco meetings under örganization" which takes you to the collaboration meetings should go under the collaboration section and the meetings that should go under örganization should be like technical board, executive board, etc. I'll look into it.
Paul Harrison One obvious thing missing from the old web, which I'd like to see on the new one, is a set of "glossy" style pictures of the detector, which anyone can download for talks etc. Good idea.
Milind Purohit A suggestion for a new link: the Graphics Tutorial page under "Offline Software". The URL is http://prancer.physics.louisville.edu/GraTutorial/ Now done.
Paolo Palazzi Ideally, a better graphics design of the navigation framework, before the final release. It would be nice, but there is little time.
Paolo Palazzi Why not replace the use of "www" in the directories with "web" which is easier to say? The use of www is too ingrained in our scripts and would be a lot of work to change.
Tim Adye The navigational info could be moved to the top of the page. This would result in BaBarians having to scroll down every time they hit a page.
Charlie Young Change Physics SW releases to QA releases page. Now done.
Joseph Perl Navigation through the new web could be improved by more attention to parallel structure. In the Computing System Home Page, the first centered item in the left sidebar, Environment, is a heading but is not a link; the second centered item in the left sidebar, Online SW, is a link; and the third centered item, Offline, is again just a heading, not a link. I agree, but at the moment some of these links do not exist but I still consider these titles to be necessary parts of the navigation bars. Especially since, for example, the simulation pages which are listed under "Offline SW" are physically located under ../Offline/Simulation/.
Joseph Perl Would it not be better to replace the SLAC link with a link to a page that in turn gives all of BaBar's institutional home pages? I think the links to SLAC and PEP-II are appropriate since BaBar is part of SLAC and the experiment feeds off PEP-II. However, I am willing to consider any good arguments against using these links.
Roland Waldi I think, you should inform every author when you applied some bug fixes (which will help the author, at least, to avoid these bugs in future extensions) and should definitely contact an author before you change the layout, including colours. For the time being, I reserve the right to correct basic HTML errors without giving notice but page layouts and colors are a different matter, I agree. Once the web is installed I will inform authors when they have incorrect HTML.The validity of your HTML can be checked using our testhtml tool.
Tom Glanzman The "Commissioning" link on the site-map under "Operations" should be removed as it is and has been for some time obsolete. Now done and pages moved to archive.
Walter Innes Personally, I think the navigation bars don't work very well with the operations manual. It would work better without them. Maybe we could have just the top navigation header without the sidebar? (Note: Walter accepted this compromise.)
Roland Wald You should add a line http://pktw06.phy.tu-dresden.de/~waldi/phys1e.html-> /BFROOT/www/Physics/Analysis/1stYear/phys1e.html in the locations database. Will do.
Roland Wald Move BaBarians' analyses to protected areas. Good idea. We could make a directory or directories under ../Analysis/1stYear/ and these would be protected.
Guy Wormser useful to have a link from BABAR home web page to the background remediation home page. I would suggest to add it under the column Operations of the new web page. Now done.
Al Eisner Remove superfluous links in computing page etc. Will do once web is official.
Terry Schalk Reverse order of computing page. Really a matter for the page author.
Mandeep Gill Could the links to password-protected pages be shown in a different color? That is a good idea but it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to implement. You set the colors of links in the <BODY> tag and this is then the same throughout the HTML document.
Jeff Richman List new Physics Groups under "Physics analysis." Done.
Jeff Richman Change Organization to "Principles" in Physics sidebar. Done.
Jeff Richman Update Physics Meetings page for new physics groups and link to these from the page. Will do.
Charlotte Hee Add link to BaBar weekly calendar. Will do.
Jacek Becla Do not put Offline Databases homepage inside your frames, since while doing this you are breaking the whole design of that webpage, including fonts, frames and links(!). It is our intention to get rid of frames on the new web. It may not be possible for this weekend's release but it will happen. The reasons for this policy are many and not least because frames represent a security risk.
Scott Metzler I think it would be appropriate to add "Common Software" after offline SW. Mark changed Common Software to "Histogramming" instead, which Scott agreed on.
Paul Harrison Change Physics Book link to SLAC one. What about the A4 files which are obtainable from the old location?
Paul Harrison Add a link to PidTools in the Physics Sidebar. Now done.

Questions and answers:

BaBarian Questions Answers
Fred Kral Is there a plan for a short Public Relations page that explains us to the non-BaBar world? See for example: CDF. Not yet, but a very nice, image-filled introduction to the BaBar detector and the PEP-II B factory already exist on the SLAC NT server so we could use these.
Andrea Jeremie Will there still be a "Hot Stuff" or "Current events" link? Yes; available from the home page.
Ulrik Egede Is there a better way to do web mirroring from RAL than via a secure shell copy which would provide an AFS token? Use the free wget program which has a manual.
Tom Glanzman, Joseph Perl and Paul Raines The new homepage is an effective sitemap but where is the main homepage that also includes a section for "hot items" and a relatively smaller number of categories? There will be a new welcome page and the current one will become a sitemap.
Tim Adye Has the HTML in the sidebars been validated? Yes.
Charlie Young Why does QC code wizard page loads in twice? Due to table I think; it happens with the original page too.
Charlie Young What are the .WITloc files? These are used to store the original locations of every file in the web.
Fernando Ferroni Will the new web page design be lost when pages are modified by authors or will the modifications be rejected by some filter? Changes to the page backgrounds and default text colors in the <BODY> tag will be overwritten by the wrapping procedure. You'll just edit the wrapped page directly which will be in its new location on the SLAC server. Everything within the header file markers you can edit freely. If you wish there to be changes made to the content of the navigation bars (i.e. which links to put in) then I can make the changes to the master copy and then update every Physics page by running one of my scripts. I could also make different versions of the header files for certain sub-directories, where necessary, but that can wait until things stabilise.
Fernando Ferroni and Tom Glanzman When will the new web replace the old web? The weekend of the 7th of February.
Roland Waldi Why should the colors in the 1st Year Physics pages be changed? Is it not just a matter of taste? Regarding web pages with light text on dark backgrounds, I believe it is more than just a matter of taste to urge people not to make such pages. A lot of BaBarians do find them difficult to read. (Further, on occasion, visiting BaBarians are forced to use black and white x-terminals.) Such pages can look very stylish but the main purpose of the pages is to inform BaBar Physicists what is going on. Any feature of the pages which makes it difficult to read is therefore something which should be removed.
Joseph Perl Is the user to assume that the center line of links in the horizontal, top navigation bar is of some different order than the other lines of links? If so, this difference is not apparent. The white strip which marks the middle row of elements is meant to make the main sections of the new web more prominent than the external links (above) and the more general BaBar links below.
Joseph Perl Has it been decided to actually use the Mind-it service? If so, who retains control over the subscription information? Could BaBar retrieve the relevant information should we later want to switch to some other minder service? We would prefer to write our own tool for page subscription (Paul Raines thinks he could write one), but for now we will keep the Mind-it link on the pages as many BaBarians use this feature. Sadly, we won't be able to access Mind-it's files unless we bought their very expensive tool instead of using their free service.
Mauro Morandin Will it be possible to continue using the WWW for making available all information related to the cosmic run in the same ways as before? Currently, shift takers documentation is updated very frequently using a Netscape editor on a PC and publishing it. Yes, unless there is something very unusual about the way things are done. However, note that the URLs will change and that the web will essentially be frozen for at least a day while the final update is made.
Tom Glanzman In general, what will be the process for modifying the Home Page? Who typically responds to requests for updates, and who can respond to such requests? The homepage will be a small page with only a few links plus the Hot Items section. As is the current situation, Tom, myself, Charlotte Hee and Barbara Barrerra will make changes to the homepage.
David MacFarlane and Guy Wormser What changes to the file and directory structure on the Unix server are involved, if any, in the new web? All the details on the new web, its file structure and tools, can be found on the web. There is a new file structure under $BFROOT/www/.
David MacFarlane and Walter Innes What will be involved in publishing a page to the new web once it is in place? Will it be tedious process? When you publish a page to this area then you can use our WEBwrap tool to wrap the page, although the wrapping will probably be checked every night by a script which will insert missing navigation bars.
Roland Waldi Will the navigation bars appear only for pages in upper level of the link tree? No, all levels are covered currently, but this may change.
Roland Waldi Does the locations-changing procedure require the ".." around addresses within HTML files? Yes.
Roland Waldi Is there is a decent, legal small elephant, with transparent background and no copyright text? All legal BaBar images are stored under $BFROOT/doc/Images/.
David MacFarlane How are the rearrangements of AFS mounts and provision for adequate AFS disk space being handled? This is in hand; Paul Raines has sorted it out.
Uriel Nauenberg What is the password for access to protected pages in new web. See $BFROOT/etc/webpasswd/README
Francesco Forti How are we supposed to update the web from now on. We have our web pages (at least most of them) maintained under CVS, and we usually checkout the page, modify it and then commit it back. At commit time a reference copy is made in the web area. Is this mechanism still working with the new web? In future, when you commit a file to CVS you will have to make sure that the reference copy goes to the file's new location because the old location will be write-protected. Then you can wrap the reference copy using "$BFROOT/doc/www/WebTeamPages/tools/bin/WEBwrap -ah filename.html".
John Harton I have a page I need to link to the TauQED link under physics groups on the physics page. How do I do that? Copy your file to $BFROOT/doc/www/Physics/ and then edit the link in $BFROOT/doc/www/Physics/Physics.html. It will filter through to the new web later this week.
David MacFarlane and Roland Waldi What are the plans for the BABAR internal pages? There will be effectively no $BFROOT/internal/ as these directories are now under $BFROOT/www/. However the access contol lists and password protection will still remain for all those directories formally under $BFROOT/internal/.
Lenny Kissell and Bob Jacobsen What happens to future updates to pages on the web? Will they be lost? Should we avoid making changes until the new web is installed? Operate as usual until Monday the eighth when you'll edit your files from their new location. All previous updates will filter through.
