Simu production tape list - July-Sep '96 runs

This page lists the tapes sent to SLAC and RAL from the remote production centers, their content and their disposition. Information is derived from production discussion postings which must accompany tapes sent to SLAC and RAL. Page maintained by Torre Wenaus and Hwanbae Park. Corrections, problems, questions to wenaus@llnl.gov and hpark@pizero.colorado.edu.

All tapes sent to SLAC must be accompanied by a posting to the simulation production discussion specifying

  • A list of the files on the tape, making it clear what the files are. Files should be tar files containing one or more run directories generated by production. The list should specify the runs included in each file. Use default block size/reclen with tar.
  • A list of file sizes, either as part of the file list or separate (eg. directory listing).
  • What sort of drive wrote the tape (4mm or 8mm). If 8mm use low density. Don't use manual compression (gzip, compress).
  • Be sure to set tapes READONLY before sending.

Please note that files should be kept to 800MB or less. (That is an uncompressed size, and please do not compress files manually.) They should be big enough that the number of files on the full tape is circa 10 or less. Tar multiple run directories together to achieve this. Just be sure to document in your posting what the content of the files is, with sizes. There is no restriction on the amount of data on the tape; the only limits are on the file count and file size.

Copy (cp) tar files to the tape. Charlotte will give the tape a short logical label based on the label you give the tape, so keep labels to within 10-12 characters.

Please send tapes to Charlotte Hee, with a copy of each to RAL, respectively to

NB. Fedex adds circa 2 days delivery time to a package reaching Charlotte's desk (unlike conventional mail, Fedex packages are held in the mail office), so at least for domestic mailings, Fedex doesn't save time.

Other tape info:

  • Charlotte maintains a list of tapes received at SLAC; consult this to learn whether a tape of interest has been received.
  • She also maintains a list of tapes copied to the silo.
  • All external tape handling activity must be done from tapeserv1.slac.stanford.edu
  • Silo tape list and info is here.
  • the $BFROOT/prod/bin/tapestat script reports the contents of the 4mm and 8mm drives. It can only be used from tapeserv1
  • the tapemap command (see 'man tapemap') eg. 'tapemap -V<vol>' runs a job and gives a dump of <vol> which includes how much tape was used, number of bytes on each file, and things like this. If you don't specify the '-o <output filename>' option the output of the job will be sent back as a mail file.

Production center tape list

For the details of what is on what tape, see the associated posting.
Test tapes are not included in the list. SLAC writes XDR files to the
silo; external tapes made by SLAC are not recorded here.
